Ships Handling

I just bought a Python maybe a week ago and have tried a few kit variations but am using it primarily as a heavily armed trader.

I did try it kitted for fighting in a RES with limited success but the thing handles like lead swimming in cold molasses. The only way I can even keep any smaller ships in my sights is by maneuvering in reverse. Even medium ships (Asps, Clippers, Adders) get away easily and you can forget about Eagles and such!

What gives? I am running A-5 Thrusters with a hull mass of 877T.

A5 is a class below what it should fit but I am not at all clued in on how the thruster mechanics work. You are correct the Python is a slow beast compared with most, its designed like a tank :D Get some turrets for those pesky Eagles and Couriers. Oh and yes, reverse move is the pythons main weapon :p

Its sheer firepower and shields make it quite a good RES and CZ combatant since its straight line speed isn't bad and its almost never overwhelmed. On the other hand using a Clipper allows you to get to engagements quicker often beating other players or the police... <- I'd say Clipper is most fun to fly.

I believe the ships all up mass shouldn't be too much more than half the thrusters optimal mass (OM) mines under 600 T no cargo so 6D thrusters are pretty good with an OM of 1080 T compared to 1440 T for 6A

Yes, as mentioned above, the 6D thrusters are FAR superior to a 5A, and will cost you $4.5 million less. You should be able to maneuver with an Asp, and out maneuver a Clipper, so try the thruster upgrade first. As also mentioned, reverse is your friend, learn it, love it. I'm currently flying a Python with two gimbed pulses, and a fixed cannon with two gimbed multi cannons, as the latter just eats through armor. I did start on the Python with three gimbed pulses, and that pretty much handled the small stuff with ease, but multiple little guys does make it interesting from time to time, so utilize that tank feature, as she's made to absorb damage.

That's funny because I just switched back to the 6D's right before I read your post.

I had the 6D's on it before I decided to try the 5A's because I mean hey, A's have to be better right? Well they weren't any better IMO so I went back to the cheaper thrusters since this is mostly a trader but quite able to handle any interdiction fun.

And I basically have the same loadout as you short of running a gimballed multi-cannon under the nose. It drops shields quick and then swiss-cheese's a ship in short order once you get a hold of it.

I do like the weapon output of the Python, and there's really no bad loadout.

One thing I did discover in playing around with it in-game, in that I prefer almost everything D rated, except the drive and distributor. I found that the A rated distributor recharges a D shield fairly quickly with only 2 pips (and that includes a shield booster) while an A rated shield with a D rated distributor was almost unplayable after the initial volley. Throw in the facts that the A distributor also gives you an incredible boost to firepower and thrust regeneration (not to mention that it's $7 million cheaper), and I'd definitely focus on making that your next A component.

Just my 2 cents.

Yep an A power dist is very high on my list of upgrades on any ship I equip. this is what I am currently running.

And I do thank you for your input Sir!

I would drop that MC thats in a large slot and either replace it with another large pulse OR (in my opinion better option here...) a large gimballed Cannon. The cannon will really help eat through the larger vessels (MC's do seem to struggle on pythons and Conda's) and then the MC's for smaller.... or alternatively 3 large pulses will do more than reasonable damage to all sizes of vessel.

As a side note. You thought that 5A thrusters would be better than 6D. Look at the actual stats of the thrusters on Coriolis and you'll undersdtand why thats not how they work. The 6D's allow for a FAR higher optimal and maximum mass... the grade doesn't matter at all in this situation, only the mass and thats your top priority.

Lastly power Dist for A rating should ALWAYS be your top priority if you're doing any form of combat because it effects not only your weapon and shield recharge rates but also your engine speed and boosting capabilities....

Oh oh yes indeedy do. Been slightly disappointed with the current state of my Python (only had it two days) untill I popped in a A grade distributer tonight, 9mill well spent. It's a different ship. Everything is so much better.

good advice peeps :)

Get some cargo rack and trade until you can afford the 6A thrusters.
If you're going to use a large multi-purpose ship to fight you want to give it the best possible chance to move properly!

Yup, figured you'd appreciate that A distributor, as it completely changes the her capability in a fight. She's still a bit slow, but she can now dish out and take a lot more punishment.

Yes, A grade thrusters and distributor.
Then and only then the Python can show its strength.
Tried it once with C modules and promptly sold it again. Thank god i gave it a second chance it for cheap during 1.3 beta.
Now its my favorite ship, together with my Clipper, and rightfully so.
