Hands up - who's tried to use the keyboard?

So, I finally finished my new build today, I bought a GTX 1080 G1 gaming, and plugged it in to the Gene VIII Mobo, with the 6600K, and set up the CV1 that I have held off using because my old rig had a GTX970 (for about 2 months, mind you)...

Anyway, I wasn't really blown away by the cockpits, as I've known and understood just how huge they are for along time - more a case of "finally, it looks as it should!".

What did end up screwing me over, though, was when I was sitting in a starport, docked, looking around the bridge of my Anaconda reading all the little labels everywhere, and when I looked down at the throttle, I reach out and... Oh, that's not my hand, and I can't use that keyboard to exit the game...

It amazed me how the virtual arms and hands make your mind think they are really yours.

Anyway, that was fun, will be tweaking graphics tomorrow...

Z...

PS - glasses suck, I have a mild headache from the pressure of the HMD pressing on the frame. I'll be getting monthly contacts, me thinks.

Wow that's some restraint if you've had the CV1 and not used it for 2 months - glad you're abourd the VR train though :)

I know what you mean about the in game arms and legs - I have an evolving cockpit setup which brings me very close to what's in game and its quite a strange feeling and more so for me with the stick as my modified Thrustmaster Cougar doesn't have more than 1mm of movement due to it's now using force sensors. When looking at my right hand it looks like its fully deflecting the stick and my brain also tells me my real hand is also doing this, but in reality it isn't its just me applying more pressure......

Oh for glasses - I took mine off as they were too wide for the Rift and like you were giving me headaches - I find I can do fine without them, whilst I get a new set of lenses for a set of "Neo" glasses I've had since the late 90's.

I play with a razer orbweaver sat on my left leg, so I have said keyboard :D

What got me was how skinny my arms etc are in game.....im a thin guy to begin with, but the model in game must be 12 years old...
What also got me, was getting out of the seat and turning round...to see a headless body ... MOVING

View Poll Results: What type of controls do you use?

Shows that a similar number of people use keyboard as opposed to HOTAS.

I think you did not understand my post - it was about my brain being tricked into trying to use the in-game keyboard that is on the left side of the throttle in the cockpit of most ships.

As for your conclusion - it's flawed... I use a HOTAS, pedals, keyboard and mouse - all to play ED. Depending on which part of the game I am interacting with (starmap, system map, flying, menu navigation). Remember, you can select more than one option in that poll.

I found I instinctively 'stretched' my hand in response to the avatar doing the same on the hotas! And yes, I've smacked my head on the desk a few times while leaning in to the dashboard.

I have the same issue with my glasses. And I don't like contacts.

May have to look into these: https://vr-lens-lab.com/

Also bind your hotas to the galaxy map and switch on the grid. Makes it easy to navigate.

Little secret for you, there is a type of contact lens you can leave in all week, even overnight while you sleep. Ask about extended wear contact lenses. I've been using them since 1999, this particular type for over 10 years http://www.visiondirect.co.uk/brand/biofinity-contact-lenses/biofinity but from Specsavers under the opteye brand. I hate wearing classes and I hate putting contacts in of a morning just as much.

Haha nice one @Zeeman - I've looked longingly at the keyboard once or twice too!

And like Wood67, I've smacked my head/Rift into my monitor trying to look at a ship that was landing above me while in my Anaconda.
I tried to lean forwards and peer up to see which ship was making that crazy buzzing noise (right after the update with the Beluga).

As for the glasses - persevere - yeah contacts might well be the best solution, not only for ED, but for real life too. I take it you're short-sighted? Much easier to wear contacts and just have sunglasses to look for rather than two pairs etc. In the Rift you're going to lose some FoV by wearing glasses a you can't get close to the actual Rift lenses. Contacts will fix that (and they're a better optical solution irl too).

I'm actually lucky in a way - I had cataracts at 42, really early, and I was VERY short-sighted at -11.5 and -13.5 - all of my glasses were coke bottle jobs with 1/4 inch thick sides. Horrific. [blah]
But getting the cataracts fixed made me slightly long sighted - so while I can't clearly see anything less than 6 feet away without reading glasses, its fine in the Rift without glasses at all.

Yup, that's next on the list, thanks for reminding me. I only did a CZ and a RES, and some looking around the various cockpits of the ships I had at my Ebana base.

I tuck my socks between my toes.

I actually have Tabi boots somewhere from my martial arts days. I may have to dig them up.

For immersion...

As I said - monthly contacts, though I think I did not make it clear, they are the ones that claim you can wear them for a month, but really, a week is probably as far as you'd want to push it.
I did have a set, but I need to trial a different brand, as the ones I trialled were a bit too good - they were so comfortable, and fit so well, that I actually couldn't get them out of my eyes. They stuck so hard, it took me over an hour to remove them.

Actually, I'm far sighted, but there's some astigmatism going on, and my prescription is nearing the +6 region. My eyes are kind of strange, though, at the same time, my night vision is excellent, and my peripheral vision also, if I am wearing headphones, I can usually see them from the corner of my eyes whilst looking straight. Wearing glass is actually frustrating in that sense, as at constricts my otherwise very wide view of the world, I just need to get my contacts sorted again, it's been nearly a year since I wore them.

Having messed around a bit now, I wonder if Leap Motion support could be added for this game?

It would allow the use of the in game KB, which, whilst slower, would be better than taking the headset on/off. Yes, learning to touch type is probably the solution, however, I have a Commander chair" set up right now, and nowhere to stick a KB but my lap, would dearly love to ditch it.

I think a Leap Motion type thing could also be a much better way to interact with the galaxy map...

Anyway, just dreaming...

Ah no worries, I stand 'corrected'.
Sounds kinda cool to have good peripheral vision though - I've had so much laser surgery holding my retinas in place that I've lost a little of my edges.

I'm only about a +1.5 now after cataract surgery, and they fixed my astigmatism too with the replacement lenses, so I can use the Rift without glasses. However, I do see the pentile pixels 'really clearly' so the screen door effect is quite visible for me. Luckily I don't find it too distracting, and knowing the technical reason for it being there in the first place helps. :)
One person on my daily bus trip did notice though, as the polycarbonate lenses in my eyes do reflect light differently - they kept seeing a red flash as the sun was hitting me full on and they said I looked like the Terminator!

Lol auto correct really does want to remove the 't' from 'pentile'... *added to dictionary before something really gets taken out of context* hah!

Yes they have with new lenses as well to get rid of any distortion. Have another look.

Well they did yesterday, but can't see them on my phone browser.

Thanks for that, they need to sort their website out. If you click on the green 'Shop now' button on the home page it takes you straight to the Vive lens page, but if you select Shop now at the top of the page, you can select Rift lenses.
