Hangar module for Elite

I think it would be great if also Frontier built an Hangar module, apart from the game itself, so we can se hour ships. It would not take much time and it would be a nice addon to the game.

You may find that most of the time that your ships would be scattered about rather than all in one place at the same time. A nice idea though. Perhaps when the EVA expansion is released would something like this be possible.

But I don't think we need something like that as some standalone product. If you compare it to the one in SC, my limited understanding of the existence of that software is, for all the money they have garnered, they don't have much to show the community so this was knocked up as a way of keeping the backers sweet so they can check out their ships they bought as their designs are completed.

The landing pads in Elite isn't quite the same thing as the hangars in SC. ;)

I remember manually typing a program into my BBC micro line by line from a computing magazine back in the mid 80's. It allowed you to view all the objects from the BBC Disk version by pressing a letter on the keyboard. They rotated in the same way the Cobra Mk III, Krait, Mamba did from the Load New Commander screen.

I remember cycling through the alphabet, pausing when either the Constrictor or Fer-de-Lance appeared and dreamed of flying them.

Yes, it would be great to have something similar just to view the stunning models FD have worked so hard on but I wouldn't want them to spend huge amounts of time and money on it - maybe something more akin to an Encyclopedia where you can view objects discovered in your game.

Considering how secretive the have been about the ships so far I wouldn't really bet on them doing this. I mean it was first now with the Alpha we got to see The Cobra MkIII and even if we know from interviews with the team that there are many other ships more or less finished (at least the exterior) they obviously haven't shown these yet. Personally I like this...I rather discover these ships from inside the game the first time since the impact would be greater IMO. After the game has been out for a while they could probably do something similar to the web-based ship viewer the EVE Online uses on their site.

I didn't intend the hangar module to be relased now, but once the game has released. Due to the fact that our ships will be spread over different locations, it would be cool sometime to see them all in the same place.

I'd rather they didn't build a hangar module initially.

Not a lot of point in coding something that isn't going to be part of the game. Also, not a lot of point in building something that SC has built as it will invite more of a direct comparison. Better to go with the plan and see what people think.

Later though, fine. :D

I like the in-game Encyclopaedia as a way of viewing the ships. However as the OP suggest viewing the ships you own, maybe that wouldn't be best suited for an Encyclopaedia. If the expectation here is a clone of what SC now has, that could include elements of EVA and thus could be a while off yet.

Personally I think there's a ton of features I'd like to see implemented before virtual trophy cabinets such as this.

Thing is with a game world size of 100 billion stars your not going to be staying in the same system for very long (unless you choose to I suppose). It's not like SC which only has about 100 systems and nothing is that far away.

A much better way would be playable capships, which can store many small ships in a hanger. That way you take your stuff where ever you go :)

Even if you find a favourable trade route, it will only last so long before you have to move on. Or you could hang around and pirate others who are still making profitable runs of course. ;)

To be fair I don't we know how big these systems are likely to be, how long it takes to traverse one or how long it would take to go from one side of their universe to the other. That said there is no way that it will ever approach what FD are trying to do but it is likely it will still have enough "stuff" to make the world feel alive.

I don't think the intention of this game was to ever make some kind of empire builder, like the earlier X games, which do this very well. Other than the odd other ship you have parked somewhere your stuff would consist of your ship, it's cargo and the clothes on your back.

I figure landing needs lots off testing, and ecspect it to be in the next Alpha update.

It would not take much time .

Didn't it take SC 6 months or more to come out with the hanger module? There's no way I'm prepared to delay ED by 6 months just for a gimmick like that... Especially when they're on track to release in 3 months!

Lets not. The problem with SC is they are bowing to every backer request and losing track of the core gameplay (dogfighting) as proven by the lack of any progress on that front. If you want a nice fishtank in your hanger this isn't the game..

I am sure it will need a lot of testing and balancing too! From the DDF archive:

"Rotational correction within the station will alleviate a lot of the difficulties in landing with a spinning station
The skill will then be focussed on lining up with the right pad and gently touching down rather than performing constant thruster changes to keep in position"

So we will all need to learn how to land within the station having docked, on the right pad.

One would assume this will be somewhat challenging as well as affording an opportunity to see any other ships that happen to be docked, even if they are all sidewinders.

As it's using the cry engine they won't be massive, no where near enough room for a scale planet etc. The engine has a hard limit on how big a map can be.
