Today, 06 March 2013 year, marks the 76th birthday of a space pioneer who, unfortunately, is virtually unknown in America. Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on June 13th, 1963 — over two decades before an American woman would emulate her.
Tereshkova was only 26 years old when she launched aboard the Vostok 6, making her the 2nd youngest spacefarer in history. (The youngest was fellow cosmonaut Gherman Titov who was 25 when he piloted Vostok 2 in 1961.)
