Hardware & Technical Hard drives V flash drives discuss

While I cant discuss specifics - I recently brought online a rather tasty SAN line in the Pb range.

Mostly HDD based.

Flash is all well and good and lovely, but remember - if your batches are perfectly timed on known latencies and runtimes, recoding those timings can be more expensive than any benefits from faster storage.

Do you even know how much storage is dedicated to over-provisioning in your drive?

Kingston state they use 7% on their consumer drives, at least the low end ones I've bought. This also roughly ties up with marketed space vs. nearest power of two capacity. I haven't looked it up for other brands. I don't really care, as long as they do their job.

Yup, as long as it works, most folks don't need to know how this stuff works. Sometimes I'm surprised this stuff works as well as it does. ;)
