How about the idea of having ammo storage in hardpoints for extra ammo. Say you really like one weapon centered. And instead of extra weapons you would rather have ammo. This can be ammo for specific weapons or for any weapon and you can use it like specialized cargo for ammo only. It would just have the ammo of another weapon or two. to make it useful. Would be good for mining where specific locations are more useful. Or for combat where you want to farm longer. Say it holds up to 2- 4 times the normal ammo of a weapons. And they could be targeted i combat and explode internally causing hull damage even when shields are present. Unless modules protection is present to take the damage. Potentially malfunctions could cause explosions.
And ammo damage could be relate to normal type of damage and differ per weapon type. Ballistics could potentially explode causing explosive damage. So could missiles. (This could be effected by explosive armor protection and module protection. Unless it doesn't make sense for armor to stop it as it's internal.) Other types could do no damage like railgun and plasma could cause thermal damage. Assuming you need damage type. It could be dependent on if it makes sense for it to do damage. in fact rail gun ammo could be an example of harmless weapon ammo as it should logically not need an internal means of propulsion like a gun shell with explosives inside. I think rail gun ammo is just solid material. It could add extra weight though as a compensation. Although that is not implemented yet. Plasma could do something like a DOT damage to internals but be weak or strong against module protection. Missiles and any cartridge based weapons with gun powder or similar in it could cause different explosive like damage and differ based on presumed warhead or explosive materials involved. It could vary per weapons as to the risk to balance them.
