Hardware change and custom key binds?

I have a failed controller and need to replace it (rudder pedals), I have read that removing hardware ED expects to find during start up can scramble/replace your custom.binds file.
I have backed up and renamed my custom.binds, now GIZMOSCUSTOM.binds, stored a copy on an external drive and now need to replace the controller with a new one.
What needs to be done to my .binds file to get the new controller to play nicely?
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You will need to find out what the old controller was in the current binds file and replace it with whatever ED calls the new controller using search and replace. Or since it is only pedals you could just rempve the reference to them in the file and rebind once in game.

If you get the same pedals then you may not even have to do that if ED just sees them as the old pedals.

If they are the same pedals then your custom binds will be the active preset as if nothing had happened. If it is different hardware then your custom binds will likely not even be available from the drop down in game (even though the binds file is in the folder). That is how I remember it working for me. A few times I replaced a T16000M joystick with a new one because the old one was faulty and starting the game I just carried on as if nothing changed.

When I finally got fed up of the poor quality of the T16000M and replaced it with a VKB Gunfighter my old Thrustmaster custom binds weren't available as an option to use (and modify), so I ended up just setting the whole thing up again from scratch. I had not only backed up the binds but had also exported them (cannot remember how) and also had diagrams noting the controls I was using, so it really didn't take long to redo, and as a bonus I was able to discard a whole load of control mappings that I realized I had stopped using. :)

Scroll up to the top of the overview of this subforum. There's a guide pinned by Strontium Dog. Read it. That will answer most of your questions (and quite a few you didn't even know you had).

Short version: of you replace the pedals with the same type, you shouldn't need to worry, but keep a backup nevertheless. If you get a different type, you'll need to redo your binds.
Good news: the owner ha just announced that edrefcard is up again, which might save you quite some effort.

Post in thread 'EDRefCard - makes a printable reference card of your controller bindings' https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-your-controller-bindings.464400/post-9157148

As stated already, if your replacement controller is the same make and model then the binds still work as before.

I tested this for myself by replacing my CHPro Fighterstick with another brand new one to test it out (since it will just live in its box as it was bought for a spare back before the controller drought) - everything recognised and worked just fine.

Thank you, I used the copy replace method and the .binds file is still recognized. Would be nice if the pedals functioned as a proportional input vice acting same as key board input.

That depends on both the pedals hardware (ok, and firmware) as well as your specific bindings. If the pedals actually do analogue output, you can use them to control any axis control in ED.

TIP
if you rename your bind file GIZMOSCUSTOM 3.0.binds
when odyssey is released it will create a new GIZMOSCUSTOM 4.0.binds (when first run)
with previous binds incorporated so you will only need to bind your new walkies control & menus
once done confine your 3.0 .binds to your non frontier dir backup
