Has anyone come across ships with magic beam lasers that can shoot you from through your hull?

I was interdicted by a utopian sentinal chappy and I thought it would be a good opportunity to test the imperial courier that I bought (is okay), only this guy managed to be flying directly away from me and was still able to shoot me!

any angle any vector this guy was able to shoot so long as it started reasonably then it could finish with the beam cutting straight through his ship and into mine, I want one.

Yeah, sometimes smaller ships now come with turrets. And yet Anacondas in CZ still roll with frag cannons. NPC loadouts need a serious rethink...

i like the fact everything small now packs plasma accelerators

This took me by quite a surprise the first couple of times, it just makes them easier to avoid now I know to expect it...

that said, I like to get close in when in combat and those pesky frag cannons can be a real pain!

Have been experiencing the same thing.

Even smaller ships use turrets.

Frankly it is a bit annoying, no way to avoid other than spamming heatsinks or chaff.

Here Frontier develops an excellent flight model to avoid turrets in space, and yet we end up with

turrets in space.

Had time to check the forums as a turret viper took dowm my shields :p

I had it again today.

I dunno if you can get 4 turret beams on a viper but if u can then you going to be strong. Both vipers only had 2 turret beams and canons iirc.
The npc's can now hit from any angle and don't damage themselves.

If they can do it then so can we. :)

I was planning to mess around with outfitting anyhow. Love tinkering.

Perhaps it is time to try turrets as main weaponry on a small to medium ship.

Any thoughts on which smaller ship would be good for this?

As their energy consumption is a tad less than Gimbals, you can basically slap them on any Ship. Even a Sidey can run 2x Beam Turrets.
Just be aware that their DPS feels like it's maybe 1/3 of Gimbals.

So don't be surprised to see all your Turrets hit just nicely - but do frighteningly little damage per second. Far less than what you're used to from Gimbals.
Due to that, I restrict Turret usage only to i.e. a Type-9 or an Anaconda.

I had considerably large Turrets (2x Class2 and 1x Class3) fire at a bunch of unshieded Sidewinder NPCs - and had trouble to take them down. #3 actually got away despite all three Turrets hamming away.
Thus, be warned that you should test them for yourself in a controlled environment (i.e. a RES or NAV beacon) before you commit onto them for serious combat.

Personally... considering their very high price and very low DPS... I don't like them too much. Just not enough bang for the big bucks they cost for my taste.

Thanks a lot.

Will try two turreted cannons for subsystem damage.

Wonder how they track compared to gimballs.

Will report back after a short test if anyone is interested :)

On edit:

I found it utterly pointless and probably waisted tens of tons of cannon ammo.

Straight back to outfitting.

So yes, annoying perhaps to face on NPC smaller ships, but really not worth messing with if you have a manouveral smaller craft yourself.

Cheers.

What we're trying to say is that the turreted beams on npc vipers can rotate 180 degrees and fire through it's own hull and hit it's target.
It can track a target 360 degrees and hit it regardless of its own limitations.
