Has anyone died while exploring?

I almost did last night on the way back from Canis Majoris. I have a real bad habit of flying between binary stars as fast as possible. Sure it gets a bit steamy but I usually zip thru ok. But last night I crashed into a star at 60c or something and found myself stuck between a M and a G. It took 6 heatsinks and a lot of panicking to get out of there.
.
So have any explorers actually died doing silly things like this?

Yep. Died about a week ago. It was the conclusion of a two-system fiasco.

The next to last system, I did just what you described, but wasn't zooming at 60c (although I have done it about a third that speed - definitely fun). I was fuel scooping, and decided to thread the needle between the main and it's companion. But at .3c, it heated up really fast, and destroyed all of my heat sinks (3), and left one of my maintenance units intact (also out of three). My thrusters, FSD, life support were hurt to 60-ish percent. I used the last maintenance unit to get gear up to 80%.

I was on the way to Sag A*, and was 3k ly from the Great Annihilator. I seriously considered turning back, but decided to press on.

The very next system, the ED gods were smiling, and I found an Earthlike, water, and ammonia giant. I pulled up to the Earthlike, took some pictures, and stared at the beauty (I was right outside a nebula and above a cluster of O and B stars). Happy that I continued on, I parked the ship and logged off for the night.

I come back the next day, and upon login, get the "Your ship has been destroyed". I sat there in anguish... 20k ly of scans, including a week in the neutron fields, 14 Earthlikes, numerous ammonia giants and waterworlds.... all gone. I sent a plead off to Customer Service, and they were kind enough to restore my ship without the insurance repayment. But it plopped me back at my point of origin - Lugh.

I'm headed back to Sag A*, but it was a tough pill. No more logging off ANYWHERE NEAR any kind of planet or star.

Safe flying CMDR (except when you're shooting through binaries!!!)

died exploring.. first time I had done that...thought I had enough fuel to make a short cut to another system manually.... a couple tv shows later and I am running low, and still not close enough to a star I could use for fuel... turning off excessive operations to conserve energy....
My tanks empty, ship adrift, I float by on battery power alone. Minutes later the windows start to fog up.. then ice forms on them, and on my visor. My breathing became labored, slow, then shallow... I have now successfully become an icicle meandering through the galaxy in a completely undamaged ship...., not even a scratch on the paint job.

(psst, why would we need propulsion to be on at all times??? it's space.. wouldn't I need to simply accelerate to my desired speed and "coast" the rest of the way through this frictionless void where only large bodies would have a gravitational effect on me?)

That sucks.. I always log inside the hanger...

wouldn't system density increase as you get closer to sag? would they also be more fast burning whites and a generally higher temp over all in the area?

You know, if you're patient enough, you can just fly away out of Friendship Drive. Is it slow? God, yes. Is it safe? Perfectly. I'm beginning to wonder why I even brought heat sinks on my Asp, but then I probably wouldn't put anything else in those slots, and I keep them deactivated, so there's no harm in having them.

EDIT:

Because that's not how Friendship Drives work! =P Also, if you your off Flight Assist, throttle up, and then cut throttle, I don't think you slow down (unless you boosted, which is kind of wierd, but would be 'abusable' otherwise). I wonder what happens if you turn off power to your thrusters after throttling up... Hrm....

same thing, Iv'e tried ways of coasting, but all are met with deceleration. Too bad too, that alone would help with exploration (perhaps too much?) Must be part of the "science" that allows us to travel several thousand times the speed of light....it requires constant control.
