Has anyone done the gathering data passenger missions?

I've been holding out to these already for a week as some of them seem to be a very long trip. Some pay over 40 mil but it looks like these missions will take days to complete. The information about the trip speaks even of weeks. Should I prepare for more than just a fuel scoop I want to empty all of my modules just keep the fuel scoop, 1 passenger cabine and the advanced planetary scanner to free up mass but I don't want to arrive and find out I need my SRV or some other scanner

With the right flying skills which come in handy on high planets, any and all beacon etc. can be scanned from the ship.

If you're just looking the the credits then consider how many / hour they will get you. As you say, they commit you to long trips and if things go wrong you can end up with nothing. Best thing is to treat them as exploration trips that 'happen' to go where the passenger asks, if they get annoyted you can still make money from the exploration data. You need an exploration setup: shouldn't need much other than a scoop, Detail Surface Scanner, Advanced Planetary Scanner and maybe an AFMU, and remember to scan all the 'good' stuff on the way out and back.

Main thing to watch out for is passengers that are private and don't want scanning - this can prevent you stopping at a nearby base (which are rare) for repairs once they get twitchy (which is soon) - adds to the tension though ;) (Yes, you can avoid the scans, but planetary bases make this more tricky)

Worth a go as they often want to see cool sites.

Yes my intention was to go for my first real exploration with such a passenger mission as I have been doing nothing else than missions around my home base. Wanted to get to know the game better before exploring the big unknown and get a big reward when I come back

I got 18m from the recent CG so I bought an Asp Explorer and kitted it out with the best stuff. I wanna start my trip towards Sag A. So I figured I might as well take a passenger with me. Unfortunately all passengers expect to be taken back to where they started. Are there any missions where the passenger wants a one way trip rather than a return trip? So I can just drop him off on my way to Sag A.

There are one-way trips, but they tend to be really local 'shuttle' jobs - < 20 Ly. Don't think there are long range one-way trips (but stand ready to be corrected - with screen shots :) )

I did one for 11,800LY one way payment 27mil time less than two weeks jump 32LY last 3000LY back to the Bubble I was pushing her real hard 3 hours I was mad scooping :) except the mission required to return the customer to same starport.

Hmm, interesting. What makes the the planetary base scans different to orbital ones Fact?

You'd have to use SR as you can't just take a run up and boost through a slot! Don't think I've ever tried smuggling on a planetary base and wouldn't for that reason alone lol! 😁

Totally misjudged a sightseeing tour last night :/ It was a 4 stop to beacons for six mil but ended up way waaaay further than advertised culminating in a 300 ls supercruise in maia  the whole trip took nearly two hours lol but netted almost a mil in ads scans as well ;)

Wow, is that what people do? Not sure my mailslot accuracy is good enough! But then I never fly without heatsinks.

I could boost through, but use SR as my trading ship doesn't have shields anyway.

As for data gathering passengers, they're really more of a "bonus" if you want to go exploring that way anyway. If you just want to make creds you'd be better off running missions in the bubble.

I'm not gonna do data gathering for the money but I'm don't wanna spend weeks and not getting paid as well. I have already earned too much money so even the 4 million CR passenger trips look like pocket change now. I wanna leave my bubble so I'm waiting for a data gathering mission with a big bonus attached to it.

Edit: I'm off exploring with Norris Arnold for a 43 mil bonus attached data gathering mission. Wish me luck!

Edit 2: Hmmmm should have looked at the map first. This is really going to take weeks. Seems i'm heading to the center of the galaxy

The good thing about long missions outside the bubble is though NPC's are the same regardless of where you go, there's far less humans's which want to intercidt you. I mean, ED is new on PS4, so the greifing hasn't really started yet. But later when it does and it will, there not gonna hangout at great distances waiting for quite possibly hours, days or even weeks for a ship to come by.

No NPCs outside the bubble away from settlements

Should I do my exploring of systems on my way back and see what time is left to explore?

No, the computer will take you (hopefully) through different systems on the way back. Exploring only in one direction halves the CR.

Edit: I'm presuming you know what is worth DSS scanning: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/339546-2-3-exploration-payouts-visual-guide - don't scan worthless rocks, just honk & run :)

I was actually scanning the planets but already gave up on that when I plotted my second route and noticed I wasn't as far along as I thought I was :D

But I'm scanning planets when they have no "first discovered by" tag. This makes me their discoverer right?

So long as you get back to the bubble and turn them in, and nobody has also visited the system and got back before you.
