Has anyone ever decked out a sidewinder?

Hidy ho all,

I was flying a 50 odd jump trek last night. While flying I thought of something I was curious about. Has anyone ever actually picked up a sidewinder, fitted it with the best equipment they can get on it? If so, how well did it do?

I use mine as an in-bubble explorer for hunting new mining fields.

A surprisewinder with railguns can be surprisingly deadly in pvp, mostly because the other guy is too busy laughing when you interdict him in a sidewinder to actually fight back

I pimped one, for a giggle and thought it would be a good starter ship, for open play. Yeah, right! The re-buy was more than my Viper and half as effective. Now it is collecting dust.

I do use sideys to go and collect new ships; stripped right down, for jump range.

I've done it a couple of times after resetting my save.

An A-rated Sidewnder is actually a surprisingly competent PvE bounty-hunter. I remember winging up with someone in a Cobra in the Brani HIRES; they were rather surprised when I started boosting in and attacking Anacondas. :D

And yeah - rails on a Sidey are very good fun!

I think everyone has at some point, just not for very long. I mean, they are OK at taking down other small ship NPCs, and they are capable planetary explorers, as long as you are OK with choosing between shields and SRVS.

Their main drawback though is the complete lack of any escape ability from larger faster ships that also sport overwhelming firepower. Hopefully the Engineers will include speed enhancements for small ships. If so, I will definitely be flying a Sidewinder in Open in 2.1.

I have one in my hangar right now...the Last Resort. Fun little ship to fly around in...I take it out bounty hunting on occasion just for giggles.

Stripped Haulers are the best taxis

I have two fully kitted Sidewinders. The White Hammer, my first ship, is fitted to do a few short range smuggling missions when I start to miss her. The other I haven't named yet is fitted with Rails and military armor I use to draw out Noob hunters in the starter systems.

For nearly all of beta stage the Sidey was my favorite ship, replaced only by my true love the Cobra MK III. If you don't plan on fighting big ships or trading, you can actually use that ship for a very long time. The Sidey's still one of my top 5 ships.

Well yeah, the game did gave me sidewinder to start and I did stick with it for a long time get it all A rated and stuff and then fly around in it until I had the money for a cobra. Did from time to time hop in a sidewinder again and plan to do it again.

Absolutely, a full swarm can be dangerous and we've used them in clan fights at times. For PVP the only choice is to hull tank it, the shields are paper no matter what you do but because small sized hull reinforcements are rather OP compared to the large ones all the little ships can hull tank very well, given that they're hard to hit. Hull tanked Eagles and particularly Imp eagles are also good (tiny ship with full sized rail gun and two torps, nice!).

Yeah but as soon as I could afford my Cobra Mk III I sold it. There's just no reason to fly a sidewinder when literally every other ship in the game is better at what it does (even a hauler as a taxi), except for lulz. It's aces at lulz.

My first mission in Open (take slaves to some outpost) paid 120,000cr! That's when I discovered how important it is to upgrade your Sidey's power supply before you fit twin beams and strong shields, 'cos if you don't your ship shuts down when you deploy them and you have no idea why.

It's also the ship I killed my first CMDR in (after I'd upgraded the power supply). :D

Absolutely, the other night I hung out in a HiRES for a while in one. It was loads of fun, really keeps your focus on maneuverability because if a deadly-elite python gets around on you, you're going to be hurting really fast. It takes a very long time to drop big ships by yourself, but it was great practice managing my positioning. The sidewinder is a fantastic little ship: nimble, excellent cockpit, superb hardpoint placement, awesome sounds, one of my favorites to fly.

I have a pair of Sidewinders, fully A Rated, and they are collectively known as "The Heavyweight Fleas". Mainly used as taxis to get me to some of my ships, but also to collect bounties from stations too small to handle my Anaconda "The Helping Hand".
