Has anyone found a cure?

For the "Ooh, shiny!" syndrome? :( :S

I *keep* trying to dedicate my time to jumping to SagA* without looking at the system map of every system I pass through on the way, but I can't. It's like some kind of exploration ecstacy addition... "Hello my name is Traveller and I do deep scans"

If I absolutely do nothing but scan, scoop and skedaddle I can traverse a 1000LY in about 45 mins (Asp with a range of about 30LY and a scoop that can peak at 752/sec), except I think I've managed that once. I glance at the system map while waiting for the FSD to spool up and.... "Ooh! Shiny!". Cancel.... greatgooglingmoogling....

I mean, I did a 6KLY detour fer crissake... just to go look at some black holes. I think I need an intervention.

Thanks to the frustration of not being able to plot a single 1000LY route, I found the cure. Repeatedly having to go back to the Galactic Map top plot the next 300LY... and wait and wait. Sigh.

Why the big rush? It will take you [some large number of] hours to get to Sgr A*. Then you're there for what? 10-15 minutes? Might as well enjoy the trip. I'm about 2K lightyears out from Sol heading in that general direction, but it's taken me 8 hours played to get this far. And I'm doubling back 370 ly to visit a specific system before I start back towards the core.

Thanks to the finding of various Buckyball Runners: one trick is to select your destination, wait till it gets to 99% then select and plot to a slightly closer star. It takes a few seconds to select and then be able to click the plot icon but then the new route is near instantaneous. I have been knocking around the core for a week and can confirm this works, both for 1000LY and 70 LY routes ;)

The other trick some people have success with is plotting just under a multiple of your max jump range (e.g. 278 LY for a 28 LY ship) but I haven't seen any benefit from this.

How to avoid getting distracted on your way? Enter the Buckyball Run A* :D

I think cracks in canopy are a good cure...
Even if not a pleasant one.

But i agree there's no need to rush, i'm now on my way back home (i'd like to test combat with friends in wings...) but i still have 6,5Kly to home station.
And i planned my trip with already 20 hotspots i'd like to visit... it will make the trip even longer.
Now considering all the unattended spot i'll find on my way and i "need" to scan... i think it will take some time.

The most important is not the endpoint, but the way we ran to it. :)

I gave up looking for a way to avoid the "oohh look, shiny!" syndrome, and as Ziggy said I gave in to it. I Left 7 weeks ago for Sag.A and I am still nowhere near it.... so I just enjoy the journey rather than worry about the destination... :D by the time I get back 1.4 will probably be out!

Poke yourself in both eyes with a blunt object, preferably fingers. Exert enough force to ensure a medium amount of pain coupled with blurriness of vision. This gets rid of ability to identify shines.

Problem solved.

If issue persists despite above measures (in cases where shinieitis is strong) then resort to toothpicks for the purposes of poking.

Maintain eye contact, walk back slowly... make no sudden moves...

:p

Eddy, I think maybe you've been out too long.

Cracks in the canopy might help.

No that doesn't help, my daughter grabbed the joystick last week and my asp bounced rather hard off a star which I'm turn cracked my ship's canopy.
Now I am slowly heading back to human space while checking out interesting systems and planets.
It's not that bad to have a damaged ship, just don't do rash things.

"My name is CMDR John Paul Wilson, and I'm addicted to obsessively detailed space exploration..."

"Hi Paul!"

"At first, it was nothing big. Just a scan here, a scan there, all in colonized space. Then, someone said, 'Hey, man. I know you lovin' what you doin', but if you want something a little more hard, check out a system or two outside colonized space. It's that fix!"

"So, I dipped my toe into the black; didn't seem like such a big deal. One little hit couldn't hurt, right? But then I explored another system, and then another. And before I knew it.... I had explored thousands of systems, and lost track of time. I couldn't stop. No matter how hard I tried, I always had to scan just-one-more-system... I'm so ashamed!":eek::eek:

"I pawned my Cobra to fund one of my expeditions. Then I sold my Asp in a back alley to a stranger so I could get a better FSD. I even stole my dad's sad little Eagle he had worked so hard to get. He loved that Eagle!"

"It's okay, Paul. You have a group to support you now."

:D
