Engineers Has anyone found Cadmium by mining rocky rings?

I've been mining a rocky ring, found plenty of common materials, but not cadmium yet, no rare materials.

In this video, Kornelius says common materials can be mined from asteriods but not rare materials, although he doesn't sound too sure, asks people to tell him if they found cadmium.

I've found information online saying cadmium can be mined from rocky rings. Has anyone found cadmium in rocky rings?

I know another way would be from planet surfaces, but I'm focusing on asteroids for now because I can work on Selene's quote at the same time.

I never found cadmium when I did the mining for Selene.

That really will not be an efficient or effective way of finding cadmium imo.

I'll answer my own post, I just found 2 cadmium, so yeah it is possible. I found 2 cadmium, in the metallic ring next to the rocky ring where I started, which translates to 6 cadmium (2x3) in the materials storage. This was after around 200 tons mined, therefore it's quite rare.

Take a look at my thread testing of mining for materials. I've been doing a fair bit of mining just for rare materials, including some systematic testing (counting every roid and fragment).

Best place I've found for Cadmium is the rocky ring around 53 Virginis, planet B5C. I got a yield of 2.4% Cadmium. That's the highest I've found so far, but I have found a couple of metal-rich rings at 1.6% Cadmium that may give better results because of the increased number of medium and high material roids in metal-rich rings.

Thanks for the tips. I've just read your thread, nice job, interesting.

2.4% means in around 100 materials mined you found 2 or 3 cadmium?

In the case you found 2 cadmium, that means 2 cadmium (ores?) mined from the asteroid, which will directly convert in your ship's materials rack to 6 cadmium (2x3).

From your words, I suppose during your experiment you were only mining raw materials, not minerals, you didn't have a refinery. I was also mining for Selene Jean, so in my case, if I count the around 200 tonnes I mined, the percentage would have a different meaning because your percentage only relates to materials, mine is relative to everything mined, both materials and minerals.

As I am considering 200 tonnes, it means the minerals are after the ore was refined, so in relation to that number, I should also consider the 6 cadmium I got inside my ship, not the original 2 I found that were converted to 6.

All in all, in around 200 tonnes of cargo (more or less), I got 6 cadmium, that would be 3% cadmium found during my whole mining session.

If someone is only trying to gather cadmium, do you think they would collect cadmium faster by searching planet surfaces instead of mining, as I've seen other people suggesting?

I don't like prospecting on planets, so I do all may material collection by mining. I'm throwing away cadmium, niobium and tin because I have too much. I'm finding tungsten to be the hardest to find, but even this I'm mining reliably now.

You are right about me not using a refinery. This isn't any use to you trying to unlock Selene, but for getting just materials it is much quicker. I also ignore the system reserves, as I have noticed that depleted rings give just as good materials as pristine ones. Mining in a pristine metallic ring without a refinery is not something I recommend. It's frustrating to find 45% painite or 55% platinum roids and not be able to collect the good stuff.

Exactly. You can get this many fragments in a metal-rich ring by mining 20-30 roids, so it doesn't take all that long.
