Has April 1st been brought forward this year?

So the newsletter says the beta finishes on the 9th February, now myself and a lot of others still can't run the beta because it won't recognise our controllers ('cos we have more than 4 things connected I think). Is this a joke or are F D so amazingly confident that they have overcome the problem (and many, MANY others)?

Such a short beta seems incredibly naff to me.

i just wish they would release new stuff 1 at a time, or once a week, instead of saving it all up for a big beta and patch, imagine if they upgraded game as and when they got stuff done, wow used to do that in the old days, was something to look forward to. after patch day.

Can't do that when you have consoles to update as well as Sony and MS have to validate patches for release as well.

We used to have small patches all the time early on before ED existed on consoles, once it did FDev stated this is how it would be going forward due to limitations of pushing updates to them.

They need the same code base on all three, can't have different versions so you are bound to console release cycles.

Heh, I was quite relieved to hear the beta would end on Feb 9 because my mat' collection is completely full of G5 stuff which I've been hording.

Course, I'm kind of selfish like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if FD are squeezing the time-frame on this first release in 3.0 so they can move onto delivering some paid for content.

Emergent gameplay?

Deploying credit card!

I've been a bit concerned about this as well, but at least we have Adam Woods' acknowledgement that they are aware of it and are working on fixing it. That's encouraging.

What I'd really like to know is how it got broken.

I've started a thread in the beta forum pointing out the inadequate length of the current beta explaining why two weeks of beta testing is useless: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/405061-Two-Weeks-of-3-0-Beta-Testing-is-Useless

Apparently FD just wants to push it out as quickly as possible without actually incorporating player feedback into the massive game balance problems they've created with all of the changes. The Horizons patches each had 3-5 week beta tests and they individually introduced far smaller gameplay changes. The idea that FD will be incorporating any significant feedback during the 3.0 "beta" is just a smokescreen. They would probably prefer to avoid the unnecessary show of going through a beta at all but instead they are just doing the shortest possible time they can so they can say they technically claim they "beta tested" the changes before 3.0 launches.

Actually imo every single update in season 2 was significantly more in depth than this one as far as changes [ie. tweeking engineers is far less problematic than implementing them from scratch]

Are you following the actual Engineering changes? Or the changes to C&P? They've created needlessly complicated systems that have a significant effect on gameplay, not to mention that the end result of Engineering is that everyone has uber rolls on their ships, i.e., +147% dirty drive rolls, +60% FSD, +75% overcharged weapons, +40% power distributors and so on. C&P changes are giving annoying bounties for even small offenses but there's no indication it will have any real impact on griefing and trolling, especially considering that many greifers can just pay the costs or can switch ships and continue the ganking. The Chieftan is also a flying brick that needs a massive revision of the flight model due to excessive drift that makes it ridiculous to fly.

The changes are far more important than anything we got in any of the Horizons patches and we're getting a completely inadequate beta test so that FD will end up doing whatever they had originally planned.

By looking at the beta forum I can guess that many if not most people disagree with your feedback. That said I would've preferred a different approach to Engineering as well (although I believe it's different to yours) but both of us aren't the majority of the community. Even if it potentially would be better for the game...

PS
BTW I also believe they should extend beta by at least two weeks. Frontier are doing the same mistakes again and again. On the bright side that means the Q2 update comes a few weeks earlier. On the other hand we will have problems with lots of bugs for the next 3 months. They finally need to learn to also beta test their release candidate.

Maybe "Open beta" ends on the 9th.
Then it closes for some work, and closed beta opens for a while.

Isn't that what happened last time? Or what of the other way around....

It'll be the usual rush to get it out and then band aid solutions to fix the eff ups. Good time :D
Yeah, so much fun :S
I really doubt they’ll have properly balanced all the new blueprint ranges, special effects, etc. They could suprise us, but they already made a lot of negative effects worse than they would have to be before, and the secondary effects underwhelming AND incompatible with experimental effects, so I’m not holding out hope :(
