Has Elite Dangerous (ingame piracy etc) changed your view on self defense?

I theorize that carebears in-game are more likely to be carebears in the real world. All potential victims, regardless of the universe they inhabit.

BUT THE AUTHORITIES WILL PROTECT ME!!!!

AAAAAAAhahahahahaha!

'actually their main purpose is to injure'

excellent trolling man, but you got too unbelievable with this. noone would ever actually type that.

I am 24. Why do you think age has anything to do with it? Stop lumping people into groups and statistics. That's a huge generalization that has no bearing on a lot individuals within the pool of statistics.

the notion that you're too special for the statistics is why accidents happen. protip: everyone thinks they are too special for <insert danger> to happen to them, until it does.

I read the local newspaper online every day and watch who commits the majority of gun crime in my area. It's almost exclusively youths troubled backgrounds carrying big egos that feel they need a gun to empower them. A lot of those same youths don't know how to handle pressure and are impulsive which is extremely dangerous when angry and for whatever reasons are not in complete control of their faculties. Often they are in gangs and carry as a status symbol.

Not everyone is going to fit that generalisation. You probably do not. But just look in your own local news and check the age of the people carrying out the crimes resulting in shooting. In this city at least, gun related crimes outside of domestics drop quickly the closer you get to 30 and tend to peak 19 - 22.

It's pretty sad that so many high schools have to have armed security and scanners to detect firearms in school. There is definitely an unhealthy fascination with guns in this country. I think it's pretty sad.

Not only does it make guns cost more, (meaning the poorest have less ability to obtain the tools necessary to protect themselves) but it also gives the government, defense from which is the primary reason for the 2nd amendment, the ability to disable guns remotely

Funny thing is that the whole US armed and security forces only have about 6,000,000 guns in circulation v's 300,000,000 in civilian hands. But they don't need guns to cow a population if they really want to.

Most murders, guns or not, are gang related, and most gang activity is related to the war on drugs. That's the primary source of violence in the USA. If the war on drugs was ended tomorrow, violent crime would drop like a spoon of neutron star matter.

You are right that we cannot take on the military directly, but that's never the point. That we are armed guarantees that they have to fight us, which is much harder to order.

Anyway I am done :). I'm not totally against guns, but I am in favor of certain types of gun control and taking them out of the hands of people that fit certain demographics. If I lived and traveled in certain parts of the city regularly I might very well be inclined to purchase and carry myself. Fortunately my circumstances allow me to live in a strong community oriented neighborhood where it is extremely unlikely I would ever need to carry and I seldom have to travel outside of relative safety. Not many people are so fortunate.

What do you think about piracy in Elite, and the parallels to real life? How do you feel about self defense, and did Elite make you think about, or even reconsider, your stance on this subject?

I think it's good at the moment. Amount of interdictions was nerfed way too hard to my taste but it's OK overall. Parallels to real life? There is none.

...though they are very effective at killing too, which is a very good thing when you're aiming it at the kind of scum that would assault another human being or try to steal their things (while invading the sanctity and protection of their home).
It's paranoia. Its the violent nature of American society.

It's a public service
Not really, it's public disservice- a direct consequence of the American love affair with guns.
