This is a bit of the wall, but twice now, I have gotten notifications of a promotion to Elite by the Pilot's Federation. I am already Elite combat so I dismissed the first message. It came up when I visited the 2nd alien wreck some time back. I read a few posts that other CMNDR's had gotten the same messages but they dismissed them as well as they were Elite.
I was at Maia for the CG which was a washout but I collected a considerable number of massacre missions so it wasn't a wasted trip. Decided to get back to home base but I wanted to stop off at Merope 2C and land at the barnacle site. Found it , deployed SRV and dismissed ship. The big barnacle scanned as an organic object and netted me a 32k data package. The outcroppings appeared blasted and did not register or get target lock. I shot them to no avail. Just on a thought, I shot the big barnacle and immediately afterward I got a blue lettered message, "Pilot's Federation Promotion to Elite". Again, I thought, this is odd, I am Elite. The barnacle was unaffected.
So I am trying to decide, bug or no?
Well, the two messages are linked by a common denominator of alien artifacts and, the messages don't act as bugs. So I believe they may be legitimate.
What it would take is for someone who is not Elite to visit these sites and see if they receive the message and then see if they do actually receive a promotion.
There may be other factors involved that affect the way these messages pop but I couldn't tell you what they are.
BTW, my two other ranks did not increase, so that is also a mystery as the messages did not specify any of the three Elite classes.
