Has the game been made more difficult recently

Hi,

I don't want to moan but I have been stugging of late. Since the launch I have managed to get my way to Novice and have a Cobra Mk III with some significant upgrades and had a few hundred K in the bank. I had died a few times along the way but only 4 or 5 and mainly from being stupid. Over the last three or 4 weeks however, I do not seem to be able to survive. I have now been killed 15 times and am 100K in the red from all the insurance claims (I have over 350K of claim costs). I am not wanted and am beginning to wonder if something has changed in the gameplay. Every single time I make contact with another ship I seem to get destroyed. I am guessing it is something to do with the wings feature as I rarely seem to find a ship travelling alone any more so I am always attacked by three or four ships.

Has anyone else had the same experience or is it just me. I must say the game is not fun if you cannot do anything without being destroyed.

I hate to say it, but it's you.

Most likely it's a combination of your ships build, how you use it and how you are using the rest of the tools at your disposal. But without info those that would help can't do too much for you. So post your build and what you are doing when you get killed. Are you running missions or just going to a RES to bounty hunt etc.

Are these CMDRs or NPCs attacking you? If you are constantly being attacked by other players, the standard advice is to go elsewhere, preferably a long way away from the starter systems.

Also, it might depend on what your preferred trade is. If you want to trade, then go off the beaten track. Just as much money to be made, and much reduced chance of running into problems.

Are you getting into conflict with AI or other players? Is this in interdictions, or at RES or NAV points? Who are you attacking (smaller ships or Asps, Pythons and 'Condas)? What weapons are you using?
.
If you are having problems with AI wings, I'd either 4-pips to engines and boost the heck away, then FSD, or I'd try to work out which is the 'lead' AI (usually the best ship in the wing) and take that one out (the others will probably run when the leader is gone).
.
Sorry to hear your having troubles, but most of the time I find the AI pretty easy. And when not (I've had a Deadly AI Python strip my Asp's A5 shields in a second or so, ditto an Elite AI Cobra with turrets and rail guns) running is the most viable tactic if you're out of your depth.

For a lone player in a single ship - yes it is more difficult. You have to be aware of Wings - so player and even npc's can be in Wings. Unidentified signal sources that say they are strong will likely have a Wing sitting there. That said, I am in a Sidewinder and the only time I have to be careful is when bounty hunting I have to check whether I am going against a wing and what the strength of all the ships is.

When you scan another ship, look at the info to see if they are in a wing. If so, you may want to just leave them alone. That's what I've been doing. :p If I start to attack and find that it's not going my way, I'll boost twice and then hit SC to run like hell. It's better to run and live than stay and die in my book.

I'm also flying a Cobra and have recently taken up bounty hunting at RES (resource extraction site) locations. I've made a lot of credits doing that this week. If you're not into bounty hunting, try running some trade routes to build up your credits. You can outfit a Cobra to carry 40 + tons of cargo and still have plenty of room for weaponry on board.

Good luck commander.

Unfortunately I think you are right but wanted to see if anyone else had noticed anything different. I have a Cobra MkIII with 2 class 2 pulse lasers, a missile pod and a multicannon. Upgraded power, distribution and shields, warrant scanner and very little else. I have been to a few conflict zones but I had been to those before (very successfully) before I started dying all the time. Most recently I was at a nav beacon in an Anarchy system and was set upon by what appeared to be 5 or 6 ships. I went from full shields to dead in about 20 seconds (I tried jumping out but didn't have time). I did attack one ship (with quite a large bounty) but have done that many times before - with bountie and combat I have 140 kills so far, not huge I admit but I think respectable given how little I am actually able to play.

The problem with Anarchy systems is that the System Authorities are often same than the criminals. Sometimes when you shoot wanted one, the system authorities will also get hostile.

The problem with Anarchy systems is that there authority vessels at all ! It's a bug and it's being looked at, hopefully fixed for 1.3 :D

another possible factor:
the strength of NPC opponents depend (at least partially I think) on your rank.
When you were lowest ranks you tended to get easier opponents.
Now that you have reached Novice you are getting slightly more difficult opponents, and have not adapted fast enough.

also have you checked to see if some local factions are unfriendly or hostile for some reason? this can make them gang up on you.

I suggest you should avoid anarchy systems until you have resolved your situation a bit.

There has been a couple ninja tweaks to ships in conflict zones. It isn't very noticable though, AI behavior is a bit different in that they try much harder than they used to to keep you in front of them. They are more apt to ram you now and their wing tactics have improved. You are a lot more likely to get shot in the back by smaller ships.
this was pretty recent but I've been in conflict zones for the last few days trying to get elite. The cobra isn't very manuverable and it seems all of the ships are using FA off to get around on you. It's likely the issue you're having.
personally I'm happy for the change but there's always another side of the coin.
appearantly the ramming tactic was not intended and is going to be looked at.

Well..

I was just in an anarchy Navpoint, shot one wanted NPC and 3 of his "buddies" jumped me. Haven't really seen that before Wings, so, yes, I do think FD ramped things up a bit. I got out easily enough in a Cobra, but, I can see if you were expecting just an easy kill, and suddenly you got 4 NPC's wailing on your behind, you might be surprised. But, OP, if you're in a Cobra you shouldn't be losing. My new commander's cobra is barely fitted, no upgrades yet, and I haven't lost the ship, or even come close.

It's your flying, really.

Edit: actually, not true. while in Kremainn, I accidently grazed another commander today, and almost got whacked for it. Dudes chased and interdicted me too, but I bounced at like 56% armor..

The NPC pilots grew some muscles with update 1.2. Not only do they often come in wings, they also use heavier weapon loadouts and seem to fly more aggressively. I felt a significant step forward in difficulty after patch 1.2 (using the same ships as before).

I'm very much enjoying this subtle difficulty ramp-up in Wings update, but honestly, I feel there's still room for more. My favourite hunting grounds is Jen Elabog and I've become quite notorious with the local mafia. I stick no more than the Python's nose into any of the RES and have a couple of wings on my ass going absolutely berserk. Not once has a triplet of Vipers driven me into retreat. It's a blast!

Sadly, it's almost certain that the pressure will cease at some point and the big boys drop in. Then, a few seconds afterwards, turn to dust. From there onwards, it's almost a grind. It shouldn't be.

Then your not the "trowa barton" i knew ,just a very similar name :)
I've never gone by Trowa in any game, so probably not. It's been my call sign since I started playing games. I misspelled it as a kid in the first mechwarrior games and decided to roll with it ever since.
