Newcomer / Intro hauler fitting

just got my new hauler, and looking forward to making money, can anyone recommend a decent configuration, whats worked best for you? tried fitting a cargo 8 module in, but was getting "unable to complete transaction" on anything above the original 8t in the commodities market, is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I've not flown a Hauler, but the sizes of the internal compartments dictate the maximum cargo rack capacity.

Compartment Size 2 = max cargo 4 tons
Compartment Size 3 = max cargo 8 tons
Compartment Size 4 = max cargo 16 tons
Compartment Size 5 = max cargo 32 tons

So in order to fit an 8 ton cargo rack it need to go into a slot size 3 or higher. It won't fit into a size 2 compartment. Not sure if that was your issue. Typically a new ship might come with undersized racks. I remember my Cobra had two 8 ton racks in size 4 slots, so I upgraded to 16 ton racks.

Several internal slots will take cargo modules, including the one with the shields. Of course, be careful with that choice.

Best advice, sell the weapon of course, upgrade your thrusters and maybe FSD, decide on the shield/no shield issue, and run simple missions back and forth. Build up enough money to buy an Adder plus padding, and then start upgrading that bit by bit. The Hauler is a stepping stone, don't get too invested, and you'll see why when you get the Adder.

Elite builder is a great tool. Basically your 2x 4t cargo racks can be upgraded to 8t, as the slot they are in is a size 3 space. You can then ditch the discovery scanner (you are trading not exploring), to give you a nice healthy 18t cargo hold to play with. you can ditch the shields as well, but may not be a good option. When trading always try to keep some cash back to pay for insurance on your ship, so it it blows up you can get it back, and more cash for trades as you will loose all your cargo if you blow up. You also cannot upgrade if you have cargo in those spaces (and no way of telling if it is), so upgrade your ship when it is empty.
