Newcomer / Intro Have a few questions for Elite Dangerous players.

So first of all i have never played a Space Sim MMO like this before so i was debating on whether to get this.

Some backround

I Played EVE online for years but i would call that more spreadsheet online than space sim if you ask me.

I recently stumbled onto ED through a friend who said i should give it a try the problem is i have never played a game like this and honestly have no idea what anything about anything is about. After watching a few videos the game definitely looks interesting having played EVE for a long time i love the visuals of space but i am not very good at games that require quick reflexes as i usually struggle. So my questions are.

1. Would I enjoy a game like this having not played a true space sim ever?
2. Not being good at fast action/reflex games would i struggle as well?
3. Is it at a point where its worth the price tag for most of you players?
4.I enjoy the visuals of space games but would my rig be able to handle it

fx8350 at 4.5 ghz
msi 970 gtx
8 gigs of corsair vengeance 1600 ram
Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

5.If honestly someone can explain what there is to do in the game and what the goal is and how easy it is to play with friends i would greatly appreciate it.

Honestly i am really on the fence because the game looks really interesting but i can't afford to drop the money on this game unless i can run it well and i will enjoy it.

So please its up to you guys to help me decide because I cant seem to decide for myself on this one.

1. This game doesn't hold your hand. It is a space simulator. It doesn't have a campaign or story. You decide what you want to do and how you want to do it. It expects you to be independent and make decisions for yourself. It isn't for everyone.
2. Some aspects take some getting used to like ship handling, docking and combat. But there are tutorials and plenty of YouTube vids to help you out. Like you I don't have super fast reflexes and I do just fine.
3. Now yes. If you asked the same question at launch, probably not.
4. Easily. Your rig will lap this up.
5. You can play in wings of up to 4 people. Remember though that the play area is massive and getting together make take some time depending on where your friends are.

Final word: do your research in YouTube and make sure this is for you.Simulators tend to have a steep learning curve and this is no exception.

I've just finished reading this review here and it's spot on the most comprehensive and best description of Elite you'll find.
(Minus the bit about the flight mechanics. They might be nonsensical but they are: Fun! Also, I managed to do alright with virtually no trading)

Flight mechanic
1. you have flight assist toggle and press button
2. Flying means you need to have good sense of speed and judge of space
3. flying with HOTAS is great
4. boosting in the station is a no no
5. patience needed when you travel from system.
6. Being interdicted if have to chase the circle or submit to it and flee later.
7. the more cargo you have the larger the FSD you need.
8. When it gets hot under your skin you know you better get moving.
9. always switch your pips around depend of situation.
10. never try to be too smart.

From EVE to ED

hi Handheld, welcome to Dangerous grounds :) ...

1st advice: Before you start playing...don't !

As a person who played EVE and now ED , I can compare a bit this games and maybe help you get a better picture :) . As you got earlier answers, ED is not EVE and EVE is not ED. A lots of players (who mostly never played older Elite 1984, etc...) come to this game with allready pictured "how will it be" painting and in couple of hrs get disappointed...from the 1st moment your game loads, you will be free to do whatever you wish. There are no missions, nobody will push you from the back so like in 50 story missions you will get better ship, weapons, more money and finaly, more knowledge about the game. You get a free Sidewinder ship and 1000 credits and that's all. As I said earlier, before you start playing ...don't play ! ...go through tutorials, watch youtube videos about basics in ED and then try just to exit the station. Try again...and again ...and again ...every failure, don't take it personally. There are a lot of things to learn in the begining but once you master the starting lessons, not even Universe will be the limit. Don't rush. Try, fail, try again, fail fail and you will prevail.

1. Don't burn out to soon. Don't start with big plans of having 100KK credits. Step by step. I was a happy puppy when i got my Cobra. You will have to fly the ship, there is no "click n fly" option. In 99.9% you will need to control your ship, there is no pause. EVE is a beautifull game and it has many options and things to interract, the same as ED (that is long way from being complete). Automatisation is almost none, you need to shoot, fly, rotate, distribute power. I think it's more work than in EVE.

2. I started playing with mouse and keyboard. I have no ninja reflexes but I don't need them in the begining. You don't need reflexes at all, you will learn how fast your ships moves, flies, turns (and NPC ships too) so you will understand what to do when to do. Don't rush, perfection (and fast reflexes) come with training...

3. I didn't like EVE cause I had to pay 15 euro/month to play the game, forcing me to play even when I didn't feel to. ED is pay once to play game and isn't controling your life. Sure, sometimes major updates will cost some money but I feel free to play when I want without crying for monthly fee. You are having a cpu that costs almost 200 euro, for sure 50-60 euro isn't a big deal for you (if you smoke then no need to talk about money) :))) ...

4. As other players said, your pc will handle it. I have an Athlon 5000+ 8 yrs old with 4 GB ddr2 , running on Ati R9 270x (only upgrade) and game can be played, not best graphics but I can play it. I got myself Thrustmaster Hotas X (entry level joystick recomended by players for Elite) and in the future, will do an upgrade to i5 so if I could afford 50 euro, you can also :)

Conclusion:
- Watch more youtube videos, read the forums (Dangerous https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=30 and Newbies https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=75) and decide by yourself. This game has a lot to offer, I am very happy as I am learning to fly the ship with joystick . Looking forward to fly without Fly assist (watch videos from Isinona https://www.youtube.com/user/Isinona/videos ) and sometimes in distant future, maybe bying myself an Oculus Rift https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj1hFkc3Q68 .

I play computer games for over 30 years and I love space simulations and that's one main reason I play ED (and played Elite 1984, Frontier I, II, Freelancer, Privateer, Descent, ...)

I hope my words helped you at least a bit.:)

I wouldn't class it as a reflex game. You do need some coordination to control your ship, but it isnt cod
^This..

I came to Elite from Battlefield, but got really tired of those games due to EA/DICE's increasing use of twitch mechanics in each iteration of the series.

There is very little about this game that's twitchy, except, perhaps, when you realise your fully-loaded, A-rated trading Asp is heading for a brief encounter with a wall inside a station and you're desperately hitting full reverse, putting 4 pips to shields and turning it into a belly splash in a desperate attempt to save the ship.
