Newcomer / Intro Have been away from ED for some time

Stopped exploring just afer horizons hit, did some planet stuff (very little) but nothing else, now I hear you can get crew, weapon mods and make your own ship modules etc. The joining of some kind of pact/faction kind of passed me by, have no idea about that stuff either. So as well as relearning how to fly and setting up my hotas, finding my way around the cockpit panels etc. I have a billion questions, but first is there a comprehensive guide, or set of videos that will give me some idea how to get up to speed with the current content? I have searched around youtube, twitch and the net but cant find exactly what I am looking for yet. Thanks

Use in-game tutorial to recall basic stuff and go fly. Engineers will contact you soon if you play. Then you will see what they want and can google that.
Factions - well, big squadron may have own. That what it means.

Thanks for the fast response Alexzk. That is good to know.
I have 3 or 4 ships garaged around the universe, so I may try to jump around and find them will get me back into the rythm.
BTW I have read the guide written in this channel, it was very informative, a hard read in terms of how much content is in it. I will be back to it regularly I am sure

Wow, your questions are very encompassing! I think the advice to start and play is great. There are so many details, but we can answer questions as you go.

Engineering does not allow you to make your own ship modules; it allows you to enhance their capabilities (a lot, actually). The trick is that they'll offer benefits in pretty specialized roles/situations, so you'll want to think about what you need/want in the current ship or module that you'll be modding.

There are numerous great-content authors on youtube for ED content. I could name a few, as could others here, but it depends on what you're after and, frankly, what style you like your messages delivered to you (yes, really). Do you like serious, comedic, one narrow topic, something else?
OK, examples: Down to Earth Astronomy, CMDR Exigeous, Ghost Giraffe, (help me out CMDRs), Obsidian Ant, Drew Wagar - there are many!

This is a great place to ask questions so don't hesitate- whether it's in one day or one decade!

Welcome back. I guess few would oppose the (almost) number one rule that I can suggest: Have Fun!
and don't fly without rebuy
and don't let others dictate how you do things; it's your game.
and...

Welcome Back!

Thanks for all the replys.
I did jump in, managed to plot a route to an engineer I found on my right cockpit panel. loaded up with some cargo and set off on my way. Got interdicted after my second jump, was heading to fuel up and practice docking (dont have a computer docker). Got interdicted, could not avoid, it happened so fast. Didnt have time to see if it was an npc or a player. Was dead 30 seconds later. Half a million credits down, plus 1.5 million rebuy costs. Now I am thinking why did I bother coming back tbh.

Most likely player. They wait on engee bases for kills.
Player on radar is "empy" sign, npc are "solid". Triangle means - ready to fire. Use pgup/down to set radar's scale. I use slider exact in mid 99% of time set.
Well, welcome to Solo mode :D or start to put killers in ignore list (press 2 for chat/friends/ignores). If you ignore somebody u will never meet him again.
If player killed you - it will be said in last contacts tab.

Cargo is an invitation for NPCs to interdict you, depending on your ship those interdictions can be defeated fairly easily given a bit of practise or if you have a speedy ship you can submit then boost clear and resume your journey.
Players will interdict you much more easily and for more varied reasons, however in places such as engineers bases those reasons are often just to blow you up because they saw you there. Given the size of the game such encounters are actually quite rare but they are concentrated in areas likely to provide enough suitable targets.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

You've probably already found most the resources listed below but have a look and don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them on video, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

If you're on PC, your logs are there to be read out - install e.g. EDDiscovery, let it read you r logs and you can retrospectively see what happened to you (among a lot of other things).

On any platform (I suppose...), youi can also go to the history tab of your comms panel (upper left panel, the tab with the clock) and check for past player contacts. If you've been killed by a player, it'll show up there. Just one thing: if you find out you've been killed by a player, don't post his/her name here, that would be against the forum rules.
If you want to avoid this in the future, short of "gitting gud", you can switch to solo/PG for engineer bases (and any other places you may feel threatened). Open/PG/solo won't change anything about the game, it'll still be the same Galaxy, you'll still be the same CMDR - all it does is (on one of the servers) regulate who you can instance with.

Sounds like a ganker but don't quit because of them. You can use them later to test out your ships when you're bored and/or have spare cash. Like others have said, just be aware that they tend to concentrate in early engineer systems. Entering solo mode prior to reaching them is a good tip if you have precious cargo

It could also have been an NPC but they don't tend to be that great at interdicting. It sounds like you've been out of the game for quite some time though, and I got beaten up a few times early on.

I've only been playing it in current Year of Hell pts I&II but I don't think you have a lot to catch up on besides SRV's and planetary landings. Others will know better if they played before Horizons.

Yes, and you can also block players if you want to stay in Open. I have had my share of encounters, good and bad, but I continue to play in Open for the vast majority of time and I haven't blocked anyone.
The vast majority of my encounters are positive, even in CGs, and at engineer bases. Many encounters are silent and brief, no doubt because my ship is ugly, others are scared, etc.

You might consider joining a player group where you will get all the help you need plus good company.
We'd welcome you to drop by on our Discord, see link below.

Ok, I think I may have to join a group of some kind. I have been reading up and watching videos of combat flying in Elite. I didnt realise it was so different from flightsims. Really going to have to put time into training sessions to get to grips with using thrusters to manouver much more quickly. I will be back in a couple of days when I have learned to "git good" or at least "git better". Thanks for all the replys.

I didn't realise I had to 'git good' before I played Elite.

I look forward to seeing you ingame, Commander Cazerus.
