Have FD missed a trick here?

I for example have a working £10 DIY headtracker as a result - which would have cost £140 if I bought a TrackIR. You'll make a name amongst the key backers and form some excellent friends.. Its much more in my mind than just paying for

Oh ****** i shelled out for trackir before buying the alpha ! I thought the freetrack notrack versions didnt work due to trackirs licensing agreement.
Grrr ...... Oh well managed to keep quite how much ive spent on this under wraps from so far from the missus. Its a bit like having an affair ....(I imagine)

So she gets to monitor my spending, and make sure I don't spend too much money on games, while I get to make sure that she doesn't shell out 200 quid on a pair of shoes.

Quid pro quo. ;)

I feel your joint account pain!

Strangely, I don't think my wife would kill me for buying into the Alpha, it is more the case that the delicate balance of mutually assured (financial) destruction would be upset. In return, all clothing/furniture/boxsets-we-already-have on-flipping-Netflix buying bets would be off!

I have a home-brew tracking solution (using FreeTrack) and it doesn't work with ED. I've not tried setting it up since the latest alpha came out, but it certainly wasn't working before.

If someone has it working, I want to talk to them ;)

As far as I know the freetrack system doesn't work. The £10 DIY head tracker Cosmos is talking about is a device being put together by some of the Alpha guys using an easy to get hold of hobby cpu and gyro boards, using some custom written software to make it look like a joystick in windows. So giving you head pitch and yaw movement without the need of access to the closed software interfaces that TrackIR and Oculus Rift use.

So effectively the same as using VJoy?

Last I tried, ED didn't support multiple joysticks (as I play with a Wingman Extreme, and would use VJoy for head movement).

Frontier have more or less fixed the multiple controller issues since the Alpha 3.0 builds. So no need to use VJoy all you have to so is map the X and Y axis to the H'ED' Tracker and you're good to go.

I've been using this head tracking kit for the last two weeks along side a Microsoft FFB2 joystick and so far not have to rebind the head axis's or ay of the other controls. The code is being worked on all the time to improve how well it works.

I think the reason they would not do it is to retain a smaller group intentionally for initial load tests (which is why I think they made it so expensive to begin with).
If thousands more join it might not be what the Devs need?
Just my thoughts on why. FD must surely have their own reasons other than £££
?

Sadly they whole thread about that thing is in the alpha forum.

While the thread is currently sitting in Alpha most if not all of the docs plans and code for it are available on the internet.

Its just been easier to work on fixing the issues with a small number of users.

Its not plug and play to get one working atm but everyone working on it is working towards that goal.

I'm sure that once is reached that stage full details will be post on the open forum.

If you feel your skills are up to breadboard builds, soldering, manually replacing data files and editing C++ code values etc.
Not hard really but not PnP then the youtube video you posted has the links you need. You can PM me if you need help.

But without Alpha access you wont have a way to test it in game. :(

Any way it could be 6DOF, or would that require FD to allow some kind of 'leaning' axis?

The sensor used is a 6DOF one ( three gyro's, three accelerometers ) and the code currently written is for three axis's atm. Roll, pitch and yaw

A leaning forward back left and right plus duck would be nice, but as the current alpha build only give us access to headlook pitch and yaw. With the fact it's believed that a possible NDA will stop Frontier from giving us access to more.

Not that it affects us as we only need to use pitch and yaw with the H'ED' tracker to make it work.

We are working with the little that Frontier have given us and if we get more then will upgrade from that.

So no changes have to be done on your PC or the game code.

Anyways we have gone completely off topic here.

Start a new one if you have more questions.

Thanks Omegahunter for the answer on the 6DOF question.

I'd already ordered pro micros to convert an old stick anyway. Hopefully FD will be as co-operative as possible in the creation of an 'Elite' home-brew head tracker. Also hopefully, NDAs with we-all-know-who won't cripple a fantastic community project.
