Have things become brighter on the oculus?

Since the release of 1.3 everything appears to have become brighter for me. This was the proper release of 1.3, not the beta.

I first noticed it on the menu screen starting the game. I can see the MPEG noise as the movie plays in the background.

Also the halo around stars and around asteroid belts doesn't fade away, it just stops dead, and becomes the black of space. Albeit a low-resolution, pixellated halo.

Also, the game itself is brighter. Everything seems more intense.

I haven't changed the settings on the driver. Or the gamma settings in the game. Or the graphics drivers.

The only thing changed was the update to the new version of the game.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this?

Funny you mention this... I kept turning down gamma in-game yesterday as I felt everything was too bright. But I've messed with DK2 settings quite a bit so can't be sure it's 1.3. I will say that turning off shadows seemed to "flick a switch, and turn on the brightness" for me. But am keeping those off as performance improved quite a bit. But overall, the game does "feel" brighter.

I'll check my DK2 when I get home, but I don't remember it being brighter. MPEG artifacts are more pronounced now, as you say. It's especially noticeable on the XB1 version.

After I noticed this I started changing some of the settings in the NVidia control panel to try and redress the problem. But it messes up other things. Such as entering jump, it doesn't seem pronounced. Or in 'witch' space... it's barely visible.

Is it a coincidence that you mention the XB1 version? or is there a change to the texture engine for the new platform?

I wouldn't entirely mind, except the new level of brightness is actually quite straining on my eyes and makes them tired very quickly. I didn't have this problem before and could play the game for hours and hours on the DK2. Last night's attempt lasted 30 minutes before I had to stop.

I recently used the DK2 setup guide that is stickied to adjust my nvidia settings to adjust contrast and brightness so the screen will not go full black and get the black smear. I thought that had done something because I too had noticed the pixiliation on the main menu video and certain areas that i had been to before appeared lighter/darker sometimes. This may be related as i have not changed settings since and it seems every other log in in elite it changes now and i make no graphical changes.

When you get into a new system the screen darkens when near the star, but now it seems it gets so dark, almost pitch black that no other stars are visible until you move away from the primary star. It is being greatly exaggerated now.

Well.... this is annoyingly embarrassing....

As a last resort, because I don't like to do it when I haven't actually done anything...

I purged all existence of the NVIDIA drivers from the system, using the "display driver uninstaller".

Installed the absolutely latest NVIDIA drivers.

And would you believe it? No apparent problems any more. The MPEG noise is no longer visible.

I dislike computers sometimes... that just go wrong with no real cause. I'd even raised a bug and everything... that I've just had to close.
