I was just off looking for them in space, myself. And without success at all. I'll have to try the crash site!
Apparently some people are, and unknown probes (near ammonia planets in pleiades). But man, they've definitely had their drop rate nerfed again.

There's your problem right there. It's 135-150 LY, not 125-135 LY. I typically find them around the 140 LY mark. It takes a LONG time to find one, but they're out there.
Took me about 2 mins to get one on arrival in HIP 14479 a few days back. Took it back to Maia while my ship melted around me, 2 jumps out, pulled over by the flower power police. Nice. And I was only doing 6783c at the time.

The first time I did it a few days ago, no problem, but now, there's nothing. I've been to every system where somebody said they got one, plus other systems nearby. That's why I really want confirmation from somebody that has got one after they've seen the thargoid.
A couple of years ago, the captain of a Thargoid transport ship travelling through the Pleiades sector accidentally hit the "jettison all cargo" button and spewed 16,777,216 units (8^8 - the ship was full to capacity) of Thargoforming Modules all over a large region of the galaxy. The Thargoid Hive Queen was not amused and ordered the careless transport captain to fly out in a small scout ship and retrieve them all, one at a time, no matter how long it took. So now, that Thargoid scout ship is slowly cruising around the Pleiades sector and scooping them all up again. Occasionally, they get a false alarm when a human ship passes too close; they scan it, realise it isn't actually one of their missing Thargoforming Module canisters, and move on. They don't realise that the crazy humans are actually picking up the Thargoforming Modules themselves, carrying them around in their ships and using them for their own mysterious purposes.
