There has been a lot of talk recently about griefing and should you go about reading the forums, it certainly looks like a problem.
I haven't been griefed, or even interdicted by any human players, so it got me wondering: Might we be blowing this whole thing out of proportion? If so, we could be creating a hostile environment for newcomers (such as myself) out of nothing, and doing a disservice to ourselves in the process.

So, with that in mind, I decided to put together this little poll, to see whether we can get some actual numbers that would shed a light on whether there is a problem out there in the great black void, or not.

For the purposes of this poll, I think we can define griefing as having been attacked pretty early in your playthrough without any bounty on your head by a player who demanded nothing and started shooting without warning until you were killed.

Griefing:

1. Purposefully shooting or otherwise sabotaging your teammates in an online game.

2. In online gaming where one repeatedly killing the same individual or individuals over and over again, or camping their corpse to prevent them from retrieving it, or otherwise performing actions in a game to prevent the player from enjoying the game.

3. In online gaming, someone who takes pleasure in creating grief for an opponent via various "cheap" tactics.

Since my pilot rating is Novice and not harmless or mostly harmless. Players tend to stay clear of my fully tricked out Viper. Had some dude stealing my bounties last night, after I warned him not to do it again, he did so and his cobra was dead in 8 seconds flat.

I'm pretty sure that isn't griefing. You would have to kill them a number of times and they would have to have no other places available to progress in what they're currently doing. It would be griefing then.

Wow, my first thought on seeing this poll was self-selection bias, but that's a non-issue compared to making up new definitions for pertinant words.

Well I was a good sport as I let him get away with it 3 times before I warned him. Kept hitting my targets when they were on 2%. So 4th time he got warned, 5th time no warning, just pretty much insta-death. Before he was stealing my bounties I was actually helping him drain a few of his targets down before switching to my own.

Griefed? Nope... back in alpha I was shot down once (made me "rage quit" for quite a while), but nowadays - I get interdicted, I shoot them, and go on my merry way.

this is not griefing.

griefing would be if the same player does it to the same other player 5+ times consecutive without the other player having a chance to defend or flee.

Well if this poll is going to have a new definition for what constitutes "griefing" it pretty much fails before it gets off the ground. Being PK'd (and I HAVE been killed by another player) without a "reason" is not griefing. Having it happen over and over by the same player or group of players so that you can't progress THAT is actual griefing.

A viper pilot shot me once with a stray laser that slightly damaged my shields, then messaged me "sorry." A sidewinder at one point attacked me in my Viper. I think he thought I was an NPC. Unfortunately I accidently hit boost instead of flight assist off at the end so he supercruised away before I could blow him up.

I've been playing every night since launch and have yet to see any griefing. Though I must admit to have killed a CMDR who was wanted before I found out why some people had 200 credit bounties on them. But I think he was in a Sidewinder, so probably not a big deal for him. The NPC cops griefed him :)

Theres a bug, they can't see your combat rank.

Every, and I mean every, without exception, pilot I scan is harmless. Those in ticked out vipers/cobras? All harmless. I was mostly harmless before I left my sidewinder. I'm not sure player rankings work when scanning people.
