Have you ever watched an Elite Dangerous video and seen someone shooting at an NPC that has your name?

Is this how it works? The NPCs utilise the names of players, don't they?

I once killed an NPC who had the same name as a prominent YouTuber with a channel featuring Elite Dangerous.

No. Many of them were named by backers, but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the names of players or CMDRs.

Some people got the option to name NPCs anything they liked for backing the game,

The naming of NPC's was a kickstarter reward for backing the game at a certain level.

Only Kickstarter backers from a certain pledge level on got their names in the NPC database.

I was very unimaginative in using my real name for my choice. Since the days of the original beta I've been constantly checking NPC ships everywhere I go and am still yet to find 'myself'. Bah!

I actually added the wife's name as my NPC name, as a small thank you for her supporting me and helping me raise the backer money.

But no, I've not seen her yet.

One of the devs mums is a receptionist at the company I work for in our Hitchin office.

Judging from the sheer number of names from our company I see I would say he got her to grab a list of names in a spreadsheet lol as some of them are really uncommon.

I used my wife's name for my NPC choice (Janine Street, in case you bump into her out there).

She was happy until I told her I'd encountered her in game - and killed her (which I did).

Backer reward - no doubt FD also dropped in some random ones : if you give a few first and last names into a pool you can generate them, tag on the KS reward names and there's plenty to shoot at.

If you backed £40 or more your name is already part of the database, if you nominated yourself again then you've doubled your chances of seeing yourself.

This reminds me. Does anyone know how to find out what you actually set as an NPC name for the Kickstarter reward? I can't seem to recall what I submitted. (I remember it being approved.)
