Have you gone from console to PC?

Last time I played a console on a regular basis was during the Playstation 1 era. Never looked back. I understand the question was more specific to Elite, but hey..

Consoles cannot be upgraded. Their games cost more. You can hardly use a keyboard and mouse, or a HOTAS, and I kinda like those, except when playing a racing game. Generally speaking, a PC is more versatile, and I can use it to work too, which I would be hard pressed to do with a console. SO, yeah, bit more cash in the PC and it fills both the spots of a workstation and a game station. At first it was merely rationalizing the costs, in the end I ended up losing all interest in consoles since my PC could do anything they did.

I started on XB in November 2018 and in November 2019 got a PC account too - mostly to be able to play it on my Laptop, on the go.
Different cmdr names. On XB i have lots of cosmetics, on PC only what i got using the free arx - an since i got the December bonuses, it's more than i hoped for.

Playing ED on console, using an Elite controller with a chatpad, on a couch, using a 50" 4k TV... well, it's a pure basking experience.
Elite controller allows me to have all the controls i need at hand, including lateral thrusters, 4 speed % binds, heatsink/scb/chaff binds and SLF order binds plus easy typing on the Chatpad.

Playing ED on PC, well... It's quite a struggle still.
Playing with kb/mouse (i know i can use the xb controller, but i refuse to give up yet), means i'm rather crap than on XB in FAON but way better in FAOFF - which doesn't mean much since on XB I can't really play with FA OFF - at most i can use it for turns only, but not even that properly.
But at least on PC i can place some rails shots on a NPC while in FA OFF. Not a chance on XB.

Also, ergonomics while playing on laptop, on a coffee table - kinda sux.

Never had a console of any kind, but I do use an Xbox Elite (series 2) controller on my ultra-wide 34" monitor. And well, with all the details set to max, my fps never goes below 120, (or above, but that's because I'm using a 120hz g-sync monitor.)

Never really considered playing games on a laptop. Not sure I could get used to the tiny monitor or get used to a laptop keyboard.

[edit: mental typo. I meant g-sync, not v-sync.]

Laptops can be plugged into big monitors and external K&M, or in my case VR and a controller. This gives me the best of both worlds - mobility when I need it, but also the same features as a desktop. The obvious #1 drawback is that I had to pay more.

I mean, sure. But yeah. To get anywhere near the performance of my desktop pc, I'd have to pay quite a lot of money as you say :D

My desktop machine has an RTX 2080, 64 GB RAM, 24TB SSD & HDD space, and a very beefy CPU. A laptop with similar specs would be... Well. Pretty cool actually, but also complete overkill for my needs :D

For me, a PC with similar specs to yours would be pretty cool actually, but also completely overkill for my needs. Like the OP, I'm coming over from console, so being able to run ED with all ultra settings (or a mix of high and ultra settings in VR) is a HUGE upgrade from my Elephant Butt Leather Dancing Disco Shadows PS4.

BTW - I still use my PS4 for games like Overwatch and Red Dead Redemption, so my needs are relatively humble.

Also curious what people like most about playing elite on PC vs console or do they miss the console for some reason?

  • Sitting closer to the screen (I have 20/20 vision but even just 2m away from a 42" screen was a little challenging for lat/lon on landings)
  • Running EDMC and all the various plugins
  • Having a dual screen setup rather than having a tablet on the sofa arm
  • Better HOTAS options
  • Full keyboard to type on when needed
  • Copy and paste!
  • Not having to worry about whether the next update will be PS5 only
  • I got a SecretLab chair which is even comfier than my sofa
