Having a bounty kicked me to a system 20+LY away. Can't get back now.

Anyone else have a bounty kick you into a new system after docking? I happen to clip a Federal ship in a resource collection area and docked to go pay my pitiful 400 bounty. When I tried to pay I was kicked into a system 20+LY away. Now I can't even jump back to my home system in my current ship and no alt routes to get back.

I'm in a Viper with a max jump of abou 7LY. How did this happen? Any thoughts on getting back?

If you have a bounty, then rather than getting killed (and taking a rebuy) to clear it, then you can voluntarily hand yourself in - only getting charged the bounty amount - to be sent to the nearest prison. (Fines - minor trespass, smuggling - you can pay off without going to prison. Bounties you go to prison.)

The prison ship has a Shipyard service, so if you have any ships with a >7LY range, you can pay to have one of them sent to you, get in that, and fly away. It should also sell Sidewinders (7.9 LY range and you can take a few bits off it in outfitting to make it lighter) - and the one near me also sells Haulers, which will get you up to about 10 LY and give you a few more options (though it'll be a long way round back to your home system)

Alternatively, while you might not be able to make it back to your home system, you might be able to make it somewhere else nearer to the prison, where you can buy a new longer-range ship, or a better Frame Shift Drive for your Viper, or something like that.

Thanks Stigbob.... It appears I did exactly that. And they moved me literally 1 system away to the detention center. But... that one jump is 20LY. That basically means I can't get back now. I'm just trying to figure out how to get back to that system. All routes appear to require about 18LY jump and I'm not sure how to do it. There has to be a way but I'm still a noob.

Thanks again for the comment and link!

Thanks Ian. Yeah... I've exhaused the fitting options and buying options so it's back to square one. It sounds like I need to make some money here and figured out a ship and fit that will get me back.

Thanks again!

There is an option in the route planer in galaxy map where you search . look below for economical route (max 1ly)

Try removing and storing all non essential modules from the ship (weapons, utilities, shields, HRP/MRP etc) even military grade armour if fitted as you can jump out and have the stored equipment transferred to your new location.
Another possibility is FSD boost synthesis (RH panel) as you may have enough mats for a single extended range jump

The next time you get a bounty (as long as you still have zero noterity) go to an anarchy system and dock at a station then pay off the bounty. That way you don't get sent to a detention center light years away, but like I said, this will only work if your noterity is at zero.

Thanks everyone... I was able to navigate my way back.

With the economical route off (thx Hitman) I found a 80 jump path back. So I stripped her down to basically canopy and thrusters and got it down to 10 jumps so I didn't have to streak the Universe. Scanned the systems on the way back gave me roughly 100k.

Appreciate the help!

Good for you turning a problem into profit is the way forward.

This is probably one of the most helpful threads here in the forum : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/words-of-wisdom-1-per-account.146118/

Right on, Commander !
This thread is the anecdote to those commanders who have whinged immensely about being dumped at a distant prison and sought assistance from FD Support to get back in the game.

You have proved it is possible to do this with in-game mechanics (y)

Yes, like Bob said, well done indeed!

Keep this attitude and you'll do very well out there. :)

Great job Commander.

I see a bright future for you as a space ship commander!
