Having a horrifying but somehow compelling experience right now

So I'm watching the recording of a twitchstream from a guy who seems to be a quite inexperienced player.

He loaded up, and then he decided he should play with his X-box controller. And that now was the time to go to options and bind all his controls one by one.

Of course, his viewers started complaining and distracted him in text as he tried to get all the bindings right.

I'm watching as he decides which controls need to be bound, while being badgered by everyone.

"Forwards thrust and backwards thrust. Hmmm. What buttons should I use for that? .... Is that really super important though?"

combined with:

"Throttle axis range, forward only? Forward only? I think that's fine."

Then:

"Flight landing overrides? You're not supposed to have any of them."

"Rotational Correction?"

SELECT TARGET AHEAD: "Maybe I don't need this? I'll just clear it."

CYCLE NEXT FIRE GROUP and CYCLE PREVIOUS FIRE GROUP: "Is that important?"

SHIP LIGHTS: "Got that, good." (?!)

DIVERT POWER TO WEAPONS: "What is this?"

CARGO SCOOP: "Cargo scoop is important! Oh, I'm out of buttons. I'm out of buttons. Godammit."

LANDING GEAR: "Landing gear I absolutely need on one of these buttons. But which button?" Then unassigns CHARGE FRAME SHIFT DRIVE to use button for landing gear.

Viewers are getting very testy, and he just skips past UI focus and comms controls.

"Okay I think we're good. Let's go." It's been about half an hour.

I almost don't want to watch more. I'm squirming inside. I'm not laughing at him. I know this is a recording and even if I wanted to help him, I couldn't. I was a newb once and I'm sure I did the same things. But watching the fumbling around is making my eyes water. And no, none of the stuff he's done is fatal, but... but... but...

OH GOD. OH GOD.

I can't stop watching now.

Gold.

Will be interesting to watch XB1 users trainwreck on the ED learning curve - but then fighter might only be able to go forwards, have one weapon group and we already know they lose targets if they go out of view...

CQC is FD's take on Eve:Valkyrie.

Edit: I misunderstood you - he's playing the PC version using an XBox controller. Yeesh. I don't think I'd survive long without my Warthog HOTAS.

Actually, I'm not certain - it had the 'Choose Starting Package' Screen - which I think is the Xbox thing? He talked about a free one hour. So yeah, probably an Xbox player.

He's right about the flight landing overrides though. It would take an extremely unique layout to make use of that.

That is one thing that confused me. I understand losing target lock if they go into or behind a structure that might be giving off its own readings. I do find it odd that, currently, I can scan someone while they are docked inside an Outpost hangar. But if losing 'Line of Sight' means that they just went behind you? Yeah, that makes absolutely no sense.

I have no idea why people even watch other people play. I'm in game playing myself... why on earth is watch people stream even a thing outside of e-sports (and even then, i don't tend to watch those either, but there again, i don't watch much regular sports... 22 men running around a field chasing a ball... i can do that in the park with my kids and have more fun).

There again, I don't understand Twitter either.

Now get off my lawn!

Hah! Generally I don't. I just stumbled across this, and I got sucked in.

He's in the target practice training mission, wondering why he can't target the toxic waste canisters and he keeps deploying and retracting his landing gear and cargo scoop as he looks for buttons. Oh, and he panicked when he hit boost and nearly smacked into an ice roid.

It's like watching a new driver who keeps turning on and off their headlights and windscreen wipers as they look for the gears. It's really endearing, actually.

Supplies Agony_Aunt with a blanket, shotgun and rocking chair. Sorted.

If the XBOX gets the same, single-list, 197 Controls Setup (I counted, it's one hundred and ninety-seven in a single, untabbed long list)...
...may their creator have mercy on them to bind most of that on some Console Controller ;)

Seriously... I think I stopped making usability remarks and -advisories to Frontier about that humongous list well over half a year ago.
For a beginner - this Alpha-level Control setup list is a massive hurdle.

For a beginner who didn't think this is a flight sim, maybe. I've seen worse. It took me less than an hour to read through and get my first settings ready to try. I realised quickly half of that 197 is not necessary to worry about.

We've been over this ground before. Yes, ed has a harsh learning curve for some people. And it could use better tutorials. But it's a flight sim in space. It should be a given that it has a lot of controls.

I've seen similar levels in first person shooters.

And it could use better tutorials.

In my opinion, the only tutorial Elite needs is one where you are given an Anaconda, tasked to check your rebuy and credit balance, and then are immediately set upon by dozens of Vultures. It's completely unwinnable - you explode - and reappear in a stock Sidewinder.

Mission Complete message appears - "Never fly without enough credits to cover your insurance!"

I wouldn't mind that. I'd like to play around with an Anaconda for just a moment to see what all the hype is about. = P
As for the vid, I have to agree. I couldn't live without a joystick and the rest of my keyboard for that matter.

There is not enough rep in the world to cover this post. :D

I remember when i rebound my controls for my controler. Holy hell that took close to 3 hours to finaly get right This poor guy needs to stop. Do what he thinks is a good control scheme for him, and test it out in that Sidey vs sidey tutorial, And readjust.. Since the keyboard controls are awful its almost nessesary to rebind to a flight stick or a controler...

I feel for this guy. ivve been there :(

You simply cannot bind everything you think you need unless you play a lot of flight sims on PC. \

Indeed :)

And maybe an advanced tutorial for the brave new players that walks them through to the settings and tells them to unbind the jettison all key ;)

It's like seeing the Amtrak train tipping over as it rounds the curve, but not being able to look away. You know there's going to be blood and mayhem, probably body parts strewn about like random Legos, but somehow you just can't help but watch the disaster unfold. LOL

Not a bad idea at all. :)

Thing is (and Elite really impresses me on this front), I don't have to have a unique button/key for every command. I've doubled even tripled up on some buttons and the game knows the context of what I'm doing and performs the right command. Take my primary hat, I have it setup to do up/down left/right thrusters, also i use it to get around menus, when head look is on I use it to look around and I use it to move the galaxy and system map around. ALL that on just a 4 way hat. I know of no other game that lets me do this!! I presume the Xbox version does the same?

The worst thing about Elites control bindings screen is that it's all on the same page, I'd rather tabs for specific section rather than a laborious scroll to get to the lower commands

Heh, once he finally managed to destroy the canisters, he stopped, looked around the glittering ice field, and just whispered "This is amazing."

He went into Open, and started in his Sidewinder and proceeded to mess almost everything up. He took a mission to bring 1 Beer to Trevithick Dock, his starting outpost.

He misread the mission and thought it was a delivery, and he already had the Beer in his hold. He thought his transactions tab was also a way of looking at his cargo.

He took off, thought at first he was supposed to deliver to Trevithick Dock. He hadn't noticed that this was the same station where he'd started. Where's Trevithick Dock? Oh, wow, it's only 1.82km away. Right here! I watched him turn 180 without realising what he was doing. When the station came into view, he assumed it was a different one.

He worked out how to request landing permission after a long while. He tried to land facing the wrong way. His inability to fly backwards made fixing this extremely difficult.

Once he landed, he tried to complete the mission. Isn't the beer in my cargo hold? No. Oh. He finally realised that his viewers had been reading the contract more carefully and were telling him that he needed to go and get beer and bring it back.

So he took off again and then followed a viewer's bad advice and headed to Yaping Orbital without ever opening his galaxy map. Once he'd realised he needed to bind his Frame Shift Drive Key. "Friendship Drive charging? Did she just say Friendship Drive?" The first time he was in supercruise, he was just staring as planets came shooting past him with the sun drifting by on his right. "Wow! I'm going faster than the speed of light! C. C is the speed of light." He had some trouble with slowing in supercruise and nearly ran into the planet the station is orbiting. When he dropped out he shouted in alarm as the station seemed to come out of nowhere and threaten to smack him in the face. Then couldn't find the entrance to the Coriolis as his landing request timer ticked down. He nearly crashed coming in as he'd never negotiated anything as narrow as a station slot before. When he landed safely, he actually punched the air with both hands and shouted "YESSSSS".

It's then he discovered that Yaping Orbital is an extraction station. It doesn't sell beer. He swore a great deal. He somehow got it into his head that Trevithick Dock must have had the beer all along. He flies back, clearly having an argument with his viewers. He lands. No beer.

He finally opened the galaxy map. He messed with view. Trade routes. It took him a long time to find Beer, under Narcotics. He looked at the routes. He openly wondered, "So... which place do I go? The ones with arrows with coming from them, or going towards them?" It was obvious from his reaction to the text that people are spamming 'COMING FROM'!

He took off again. He'd got flight and boosting around pretty much under control now. He'd plotted a route to Eravate on the galaxy map. When he jumped to witchspace, his reaction is one of nervous fear. "Wait, this is different to before. Why is this different?" It was obvious he was staring at his instruments going haywire. So when he slammed out of jump with the FSD spooling down, he actually screamed as he saw the sun come rushing towards him.

And then, after recovering, he started checking his navigation tab for stations...

He's getting the hang of it.

And throughout it all, he's been mumbling a constant stream, "Holy... this is... this is so much harder than I thought... this... how do I... oh god, this is insane..." He got quieter and quieter and quieter, until it was obvious he was ignoring his viewers and just lost in trying to deliver 1 lousy canister of beer to his starting station. He eventually went completely silent, flying along with eyes like saucers.

Well, damn. I really wasn't expecting that. Made me smile.
