Newcomer / Intro Having problem finding engineering mats

I started a bit over a week ago and am currently planning my 5000 ly journey to open up a new engineer. I would like to get the mats to upgrade my frame shift drive.
A few days ago I finished my empire grind and had a lot of mats from that which let me do the grade 1 fsd upgrade. I visited the downed Anaconda and didn't find much there. I then visited Dav's hope and was able to find 3 of the grade 2 fsd mats. I do have some questions:

1) is there any way to make a bookmark of the on planet locations? I tried bookmarking the Anacanda and Dav's hope, but no luck.
2) how do I find the higher grade mats for the FSD range upgrade, are there certain planets that are more likely to have them
3) are any systems more likely to have missions that reward the specific types I need?

any help/advice would be appreciated :)

If it's planetary mats I think you only need Manganese and Arsenic for the higher grade FSD, if you're doing Increased Range.

Here's a good link to all the materials in ED and where to find them. Mostly highest grade stuff listed here but you can then trade down for anything you need at a Mats Trader. One of many such resources, BTW.

Engineering Mats

thank you for that link, that helps a ton!

The mats I'm needing are:
Chemical Processors
Phosphorous
Manganese
Chemical Distillery
Eccentric Hyperspace Trajectories
Arsenic
Chemical Manipulators
Datamined Wake Exceptions

I'll use that spreadsheet and start looking on the surface.

  1. Turn up at Dav’s Hope
  2. Found mining outcrops and meteorites in the SRV
  3. Found mining outcrops and meteorites in the SRV
  4. Turn up at Dav’s Hope
  5. Target NPC ships as these turn up when some scans complete
  6. Turns up when SRV mining at some geological sites
  7. Turn up at Dav’s Hope
  8. Fit a Wake Scanner and scan high wakes

Investigate unidentified signal sources. Examine encoded emissions and high grade emissions.
Land on high metal planets with geo features and surface mine them. Trade at the raw mats dealer.

Dav's Hope and Anaconda, don't they appear as locations when you map the body now? I am sure they did last time I was out that way. Also look for guides like this, this one is a bit old now, I'm not sure if it is still being updated;

Scan every ship you see. Even friendly ones. That's free encoded mats.
Also a fitted wake scanner will scan for additional encoded but be wary it uses alot of power.
Combat in high res sites with a few collector limpets will net you alot of manufactured mats. Also scan hges (high grade emissions) in space. Scoop every one of these precious emissions.
Raw mats are a pest.
A one time trip out to the crystalline forest will solve that and count towards your palin thing.
The forest is about 1200ly or so from the bubble.
There you can max out all the high grade raw mats then trade em down.
Part a.
1. Travel to HIP 36601 C 1 a and collect Polonium
2. Travel to HIP 36601 C 1 d and collect Ruthenium
3. Travel to HIP 36601 C 3 b and collect Tellurium
4. Travel to HIP 36601 C 5 a and collect Technetium

Part b.
Follow the last trip with:
5.Travel to Outotz LS-K D8-3 B 5 c and collect Antimony
6.Travel to Outotz LS-K D8-3 B 5 a and collect Yttrium
7. Go Home..or in your case continue out till 5000ly hehe
Good luck and grind with a smile cmdr

Note.. selenium is not in the forest. Hasn't been found yet. So use eddb.io tool to find a moon with 4.8% selenium an farm it.
Simples.
Grind!!!!

Warning! Rant ahead...

Stop grinding! I mean it... just stop! Throw away those "fastest way to get <whatever>" lists. Don't watch YouTube videos with similar titles[1].

By grinding you're missing the actual game. The game is about blazing your own trail. Finding out how stuff works by following your own curiosity (trial and error), by playing with other commanders you meet in-game (or discord, or forums). Use that knowledge to set a short-term goal, improve your ships as needed, improve your way of flying them. Then set another goal. After some time you'll find out what you like doing most in the game and then you can decide to specialise in it... or not.

In this game there is no need to achieve anything within set time limits. There is no competition with other commanders unless you choose to.

Have a look at the huge career chart all the way at the bottom of that page.

[1] Of course in the internet era it is almost impossible to avoid stumbling upon bits of information. That's fine and the game sort of assumes you'll use 3rd party information sources. My point is: don't let such sources completely dictate what you do in the game from minute to minute.

For raw materials, find a planet with volcanic activity - they're pretty common. This is achieved by fitting a surface scanner to your ship and using the FSS.

When you get one, fly to it. As you get nearer, your navigation panel will list geological sites. Land at one. Drive your SRV. Shoot piceous cobbles, crystalline clusters and needle crystals. Fill your boots.

Use a material trader for raws you may be missing.

Dav's hope is fantastic for manufactured materials. Again, a material trader can be used to get stuff you don't have. You can also get good quality ones from high grade emission sites: use your FSS to find these. Note that they are uncommon and vary depending on system state and faction.

For encoded mats, scan ships and wakes as has been said. You can also scan the beacon at Dav's. Alternatively, Jamesons crashed Cobra is a good place to get a full load of a G5 encoded mat and yes, again, trade for what you don't have.

Mission completion can offer high grade encoded or manufactured materials.

Material traders differ by material type so there'll be traders for encoded, manufactured or raw mats.

thank you for all of the advice and the helpful links!

For those warning me to to rush, I'm only rushing to get through engineering, as I'm not a huge fan of the ground game. I want to get back to exploring and doing combat missions as quickly as possible.
Once I get my drive with rank 5 bonus, I'm heading out to see if I can find a system noone has discovered yet. :)

Sorry, I discovered the last one yesterday

But seriously, you don't need FSD range 5 to explore. I'm xploring in nearly 4 atm.

Well there's still around four hundred billion of them out there, so you should be OK 😁

As Red Anders says, there are a few left :D

And the thing is, you can start to find 'em at around 1,500lys from the bubble. Closer if you are lucky.

thanks again for all the info. I'm 1500ly out farming the crystals in my DBX. I have one more planet and will be fairly well stocked to unlock engineers. I think I'm going to pick a random direction and go to 5k then try to find a neutron star to make a quicker return.

I definitely like exploring, but the planet landings not so much.

I found a lot of planets so far that were discovered, but not scanned. Hoping to see something new on my 5k trip out

The grind sucks it's true.. I get that opinion.
But it unlocks capabilities within the ships you build that improve your flying. Indeed I fly mostly fa off in combat because I found it easier to master in a fully engineered ship.
The difference is huge. PvP in a corvette is doable only fa off. A real pvper would zip about totally rendering your gimbals redundant.
But with all turrets fa off...different story.
That's a fact.
And l only learned it AFTER engineering the ship.
But that's how it panned out for me. Besides in an engineered ship u won't get npc ganked whilst hauling etc.
So yeah l advocate engineering asap. Then, learn to fly.
We all approach the curve differently.
