Newcomer / Intro Having Trouble

Hey guys can I get some help?

I was reading through the forums when I first got this and stumbled across some advice, cannot locate the thread at the moment, to start in a system that's High Tech and Refinery as your home base. So I also did the newb thing of messing up my standing with Fed, so I'm pretty much stuck with another empire, wherever they are, I think i saw one system amongst the independent and feds.
Any advice?
My idea now is to find those 2 characteristics in a system somewhere else and just make a home. When I get to these systems I feel like goldilocks tho because either there's no Black market in one of the (more commonly) 2 stations in system, and they're on opposite ends of the system making it more of a hassle going back and forth when I'm done playing around at the nav beacon.

I guess I would need help with maybe correcting my understanding stated above with the 2 characteristics being a good starting base, or maybe pointing me in a direction where I could take things from there.
Any advice would do really, I'm just bouncing around now looking for a home.

Hi!
If you're asking where the Empire is, because you've screwed up your reputation with Federation, it's generally in lower half of inhabited space. You'll be welcome there, no matter what your standing is with the Federation. Just go to the view tab of the galaxy map and change the filter to "view by allegiance". Then you'll see Empire as red, Feds as blue, Alliance as orange and independent systems as green. Then you can just zoom out a bit and move around to see who's where and such things. :)
You can also move to Alliance, which is the third major player in the galaxy.
(But if you're still in the Sidewinder and didn't make tens of thousands credits, you could also consider clearing your save and starting anew.)

As for settling in and making home, you really just need to do it by feel. If you want to make money by trading, it's good if your "home" had all kinds of economies around. If you want to start bounty hunting with Kill Warrant Scanner (which shows you all bounties issued on the target) it's better to make home in a system that has few Anarchy systems around and is near the all three major factions, so you can go to cash in your bounties regularly and without too much traveling.
For mining you need to move near the fringes of the inhabited space, where asteroid belts aren't mined out yet.
What I did was just fly around, aimlessly, for a few weeks, before I found my home. So what you are doing now, in general is also a valid way to get your bearings and learn to survive. :)

If you want to kick start rep building with the Empire without travelling too far from the common starting areas, look for the Liaedin system. It's an outpost of the Empire surrounded by Fed and Independent systems.

I think I read that you're looking for two stations in the same system, possibly to trade between them.

Keep in mind that it can often work out faster to jump to a completely different system than travel between two stations in the same system, due to slow acceleration because of the planets.

High-Tech systems (stations) have a bigger choice on outfitting modules for your ship, AFAIK, so I guess that's what you read about in the forums... but it depends a bit on what you're doing currently or want to do if your looking for a base system (just like krysohmyz said). ;)
