Newcomer / Intro Having Trouble

Well I am loving the game...even though I just flew into a star had heat at 700% and blew up 30 minutes into the game.

So questions basic discovery scanner has a range of 500 LS....can I use this on a star...I was 1.3 LY away and overheated.

Also how do I use it. I have it assigned to a weapons group and had it charged but then nothing happened.

And I have a contract to collect black boxes. There is only two stars and no nav beacons (that I could find) nor the boxes...is there an easier way or a more likely area to look in? They weren't in the star :)

And finally a fellow Newbie was stranded out of fuel in the system asking for help...is there a way to give fuel or tow someone? We decided on him self destructing :p

Thanks in advance guys/girls!

You have to hold the trigger for the D-scanner until it goes "BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!"
You use it to discover other objects in a system. Once they have been discovered, fly towards them and target them, then wait for the scan to complete. You have to be close enough to start scanning - how close depends on the size/mass of the object.

Discovery scanner will work on a star no problems there. Once you have assigned it to a fire group you can activate it even in supercruise by pulling the trigger for that fire group, this will find any Astronomical bodies that haven't been mapped. For a more detailed scan you need to select the body using the target select button you have assigned. Stars will scan at long range, planets you will need to get closer and asteroid belts you will need to get pretty close to. You will find Scanning comes up in the bottom left of the screen where it tells you what is selected.

The missions to find things like Black Boxes can be frustrating to say the least. What you need to do is look for Unidentified Signal Sources USS that appear around the place. These tend to have jettisoned cargo etc, however they can also be traps with a Pirate sat there waiting for a new pilot to drop in, so be careful.

Yes if you run out if fuel it is probably best to self destruct. It would be nice to be able to give them fuel or a tow!!! Worth getting a fuel scoop if you don't mind it blocking up space in the cargo hold as then you can get fuel from the nearest stars.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the game, it is Very addicitive.

Best of luck

The discovery scanner only tells you if there are objects in your vicinity. It will not actually scan and identify them but they put them on your map and your system UI as UNEXPLORED.

You actually use your targeting system to identify objects. When you jump into a system where the primary star is "unexplored", simply target the star. You will see on the left it says "scanning" and you'll hear a rapidly increasing beeping sound. After maybe 20 seconds it will complete and the star will be named with other basic information available.

Do the same on any other UNEXPLORED bodies you see ... target them and approach, wait for it to start Scanning, and when it's done you'll have the basic info on that star/planet/moon/belt.

There are more advanced aspects to exploration such as the detailed planetary scanner, but that's enough to get you started for now!

First up whenever you jump to a new system drop your throttle to zero. Then once you see the Sun go for the sweet spot on the throttle and fly away from it. Once your heat drops moving away from the sun you then have options per flying to a base or jumping to another system. Always keep moving and watch the radar so another ship cannot get behind you and do an Interdiction. Just some suggestions. Regards.

Got it now. This was what was confusing me. I thought the scanner was used to scan the unexplored objects not to just find them. Awesome Thanks for the help Everyone!
