HDMI disconnects

Anyone have a solution for the random HDMI not connected error that occurs sometimes?

ITs not the physical Connections because I can not recreate the issue by fiddling with the Connections.

I can play 3 hours without issue, then next time I play it happes after 30 min.

Totally random.

I was getting something like that, but mine was physical. I could start the game, open up the station screen and the Rift would go black. No sound, also, but the game would still show on the monitor and track my head movements.
After wiping and reloading the whole PC, I eventually found it was happening because the USB cable to the headset was being pulled down with the weight of the combined USB/HDMI cable, and causing the contacts to misalign. My USB ports on the mainbard all run vertically.
I got around this by using a USB header cable that I had never bothered fitting. This gave me 2 extra USB3 ports that ran horizontally across the back of the PC. I also pulled the case forwards a bit, away from the wall so there is less pressure on the cables.

I would suggest that you check if your mainboard manufacturer has any updated drivers for the USB chipset. Other than that, check all of your USB controllers are set to disable power management. Disconnect any unused USB devices so as to provide a bit more power for your Rift, or consider a larger capacity power supply.
Hope some of this helps.

My motherboard struggles to deliver power over USBs (get a grip Asus). I got my rift last week and after an hour or so it went wild like this. Then I remembered I had a pcie USB3 card (with it's own molex and sata power connector for decent power delivery) I bought a few months back to fix similar issues with my hotas that I had been too lazy to install. Slapped it in, plugged the rift into the pcie card and the problems vanished and did not come back.

Power delivery is likely your issue.

Yeah, power issue is most probably the issue. Power management is already set to full.
My PSU is 1200 watt :)

MB is a formula one rampage IV not sure why it would have power issues though.
When I played back in April I did not have these issues. Now after a few updates to both oculus and elite it is happening.

Anyway, I enabled battery charging in my USB MB bios, maybe that will increase power.
I will chack the AS media drivers also and maybe get a USB card.

Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "set to full" but you could try turning off power management (in Device Manager) for EACH usb controller and EACH usb hub in the list . Also do this with any Rift sensors. From device manager right click and select properties of each one then select the power mgmt tab and untick "allow the computer to turn off device to save power" This may resolve your issue.

Also make sure the connector in the head set is seated properly. That is probably the first thing they will ask you to do when support gets back to you.

Iirc this is as others have indicated likely due to power management, some times odd management will see certain types of usage as too low to make it aware a device is in use, check windows power setting make sure it is on performance and make sure it doesn't allow anything to sleep?

Asus have had issues for the last few years with lots of power hungry usb devices. My last 4-5 boards have all been top of the high end with them and when you have the sockets saturated the board can't keep up. Last decent one power-wise for me was the Rampage III extreme.

I have had to resort to powered hubs and pcie cards otherwise I get all kinds of disconnects not just with the rift but with my hotas and other peripherals too. :(

If you have any Pcie slots to spare a powered usb3 card could be a godsend for you. My saitek kit no longer has ghost inputs and the rift has worked flawlessly for me. I used to have mouse and wireless network card issues too, all gone.

Ok thanks all for the tips.

Powermanagement is set to perfromance. In advanced suspend is off and all usb in device manager is Power management is ticked off as should.
Still I get this thing.

Not sure if there's a relationship, but I would commonly see disconnects with my Thrustmaster Warthog that were a pain to troubleshoot. Even though the PC was in "Performance mode", the USB would decide it wasn't being used and shut itself down to save power. The only way I could resolve the issue permanently was to disable power management for every device along the signal path that had a "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option. The easiest way I found to do this was to change the view in Device Manager to "Devices by Connection" in the View menu. Then navigate to the USB Hub under (typically) ACPI based pc/Microsoft ACPI-Compliant system/PCI Bus/USB Extensible Host Controller/USB Root Hub and any subordinate hubs until you find the VR devices. Then right click on each device and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device" checkbox.

Hope this helps,

M

Hurrah, a possible solution!
So to recap, it might be a USB power issue on ASUS motherboards?
Possibly USB are going into power save mode. This can apparently be disabled?
This might make sense as I could play for quite a few hours without issues beyond fighting to get a go from my brother who visited. 😏
But came to start up again after turning machine off and it's all stopped working.
But have done a complete reinstall of Oculus software and it would work again, for a bit.

So thanks for ideas people, I'll try some or all of these out tonight.

Will let you know how I get on.
Gen idea

fwiw: i had a similar issue with an msi board. software power options didn't solve it. i finally got me an hdmi/dvi adapter and connected the rift to dvi, and that solved it definitely. i'm still running it that way, no problem.

This make some sense also. I have dvi plugged into monitor, but have several display port outputs and a dp2hdmi connector which briefly fired up headset, then I was able to reconnect to hdmi output and that sorted it ..... for a bit.

is the actual plug in the headset itself properly seated?
gently pull of the face foam pull at the cable and re insert that hdmi

Yup, no physical problem with connections. I changed to another USB 3 so far OK. But who knows its quite random.
