He$$eetants musings

Finally after a year or so owning Elite I supercharged my FSD in a neutron stars radiation beam :) Managed a 200ly jump! Does anyone know if the boost from a Neutron star relative to the jump range of the ship??

Also found quite a few black holes while surfing the Neutron stars, up until today I had only seen SagA, but today cause I had my star chart filtered I was hitting them regularly.

F stars in the core are littered with Waterworlds, it seemed to me every 2 or 3rd jump I would hit a star with one or two waterworlds, got to the point where I just left them unmapped as they would be like 100+ Ls away and I wanted to press on jumping towards Beagle point.

It was a good day today :)

My survey of 200 F-class stars in the Core sector of Wepooe yielded 42 water worlds, so (for my survey at least) it was more like every 4th or 5th jump. They were by far the most common type of life-bearing planet, more common even than the life-bearing gas giants. The split for water worlds was roughly 50:50 for terraformability.

In my surveys, the only things that get Mapped are ELWs, and anything orbiting or co-orbiting the ELW. Unless it's one of those rare systems where someone else has already Tagged but not Mapped everything, in which case I'll stop and plant a Mapped flag.

I had not realised that you needed a fuel scoop to turbo charge your FSD in a Neutron star. Makes perfect sense of course but still made me waste AMFU ammo trying to fix a 95% damaged FSD and then I just gave up my Neutron star jumping till I got a chance to Google doh! (note the reason the fuel scoop was off, is I have a small power plant and its either SRV or Fuel Scoop, cant run both, I need to remember to turn it back on after mats collecting)

Wanted to top up some mats and found this rather atmospheric planet. I like mats from Vocanically active planets as all the matts are easy to find in a close location stuck on all the vents.

I had no idea anything would live around a Neutron star but of course its quite the opposite in reality. I found this ELW and was astounded. Then I read a bit about how a Neutron star gets to be a Neutron and of course the age of them deems them suitable to have created most planets. Equally I had not realised that they had such an affinity to black holes and that they, like black holes distort the space around them due to their immense density. When I first saw this while flying around one I was like wow theres a hidden black hole maye be a gate way to Raxxla :)

This is water world EOK BYDE NI-Q D6-1994 C 3 around a Neutron star

Still headed to beagle point, trying out a few things along the way o7.

So in the long list of "never done thats" is to visit a nebulae. Well today we arrived at HYPUAE BRIAE AA-A H268 Nebula in Rykers Hope. I googled and by all accounts this is big one with many hundereds of stars. I had a look around but found nothing of interest, is there supposed to be a special part of all nebulae?

Anyway took a couple of shots. I also came across an area of space that was permit locked with "Unknown Permit Required" never seen that before either :)

So today’s lesson. I really should read more about how the game works...

I realised today as I crossed into a new sector that Codex records all the same stuff you found before (ok I knew that). But it also shows all the stuff that others have discovered in that sector along with the planet names that they are to be found around. Now while this may not be “first found” discovery, it is at least a way of seeing some cool stuff Elite has to offer.

He$$eetant, the games worst explorer signing off. o7

Nebulae are just regions of space where the gas and dust are thicker than normal. So apart from the special scenery, there's nothing really different between systems in or near nebulae and systems in "boring space".

With one exception: space-biologicals, both the surface-dwelling types and the space-borne ones found in Lagrange clouds, are usually far more common inside nebulae than elsewhere. Which kind of makes sense: these critters are living in the vacuum of space, and there's nothing in a vacuum that could provide nutrients to absorb and grow. The slightly less vacuous space inside a nebula is therefore a better environment for them.

You've obviously never tried to fly towards Barnard's Loop and the Orion region; that part of space is pockmarked with permit-locked zones. Thargoids, and all that. But some regions, like the Bleia sectors which you have discovered, have been locked-off ever since the game launched. "Reserved for future content" is the official reason. The list of all the permit-locked sectors, and all the other permits in the game, and whether or not they are obtainable, can be found in this thread.

Ahh this is great insight thank you. In my earlier discovery that CODEX shows you what and where others have found stuff in the sector your in, I had noticed a nice set of biologicals in a Nebulae (can’t remember what and not near my gaming rig) .

Think I will hear back to Rykers Hope check the Codex and potentially go back to the Nebulae I had visited and make a more concerted effort to find some interesting stuff.

Q. I know that space based stuff actually shows up on the FSS as a distinct frequency. But do planetary based objects also show up or do you need to discover them first using FSS and then they will be discoverable like volcanic activity??

Thanks for this really useful tip!

Surface-dwelling space lifeforms appear as Biological signals, in much the same way as Geological ones do: you get a count when you FSS the planet, and you get exact locations when you finish Mapping the planet.

There's a handy guide to the known biologicals in the various Regions in this thread.

That was great insight thank you, I about turned and have been rewarded with these beauties :) Its not my discovery but for this first step I am ok with that, I will continue to explore this Nebulae with the hope that there is more to be found.

Felt kind of wrong shooting at them to get Mats ;)

So I searched that nebula and found no new signs of biological life. Decided to get back to my travels onwards to Beagle Point. However after a few jumps I saw this small 10-15 planet red nebula GREEROI AA-A H3 and thought no. A few more jumps and its still there, calling me, then I seemed to remember a setting that would tell me if anyone had visited the stars. So I found it in the Galaxy Map settings and sure enough to my absolute surprise no one had been there!!!
So a quick 3kly detour. After a few jumps I double checked that I had read the settings and yes I had it set correctly and no, no one had been there, or indeed on the route I was traveling. So to triple check I stopped and scanned a system and sure enough I was the discoverer - onwards and quite excited.
Short lived - On arriving at the nebula I was greeted by burger vans, t-shirt sellers, even Uber had an outpost there! So I re-checked my settings and sure enough the Galaxy map states its unvisited, but its completely scanned and mapped. Its a shame really that the mechanic does not work, but I guess it also adds an extra element of discovery.

Anyway made the most of my visit

This is me flying really high in my SRV, its a low G planet with Water Geysers, I drove over a really high pressure Geyeser and was tumbled and pushed high up the air. At first I was worried I was not going to come back down but slowly the decent started and because it was low G I was easily able to halt my decent with the thrusters so no punishing hard landing. This picture was from the third or fourth I tried :) Does not really look too high, but it was.

I have been looking for Biological life, its a pain that planet based life takes so long to get scanned. Up until very recently I had not realised that Biological life and Volcanic activity where so closely linked and I had long ago stopped waiting for the "scanning" element of the planet detection FSS to finish and was simply just looking at the planet details on the System Map which will show volcanism but to my (limited) knowledge won't show Biological life.
However now pre-armed I tried and still failed to find anything new - undiscovered. But I do know there are other Biological life types such as Notable Stellar Phenomena. That said I have been from Sol - SagA - Sol - Sag A - Highest point I can reach above Sag A - Sag A and now I am over half way to Beagle Point and yet I believe I have only ever found one instance of a Notable Stellar Phenomena - Is there a trick I am missing?

Just yesterday I got all excited as I entered a system and there was a sound of insect life - Cricket's chirping. I had heard this sound once or twice before but never had the knowledge to really search a system. So I scanned everything and mapped all landable planets but nothing! I then did a small circular search of the local systems to this system and nothing, then when I arrived back in this system all was quiet - nothing.

Does anyone know if that sound means life and if so how to search for it?

Anyway I am now back to traveling, no more stopping at Nebula until after I reach Beagle Point and I am only FSS scanning Class A and B stars as these seem to be the most common supporting planet based life. Any other star type just gets honked and a quick glance to see if there are any Notable Stellar Phenomena.

I have heard that sound before too, on occasion. Sorry to break it to you, but that's just a sound glitch - it's part of the ship's spool-down-after-arrival sound that gets stuck in a loop.

Ahh that explains why it disappeared. I had notions of wormholes transmitting sounds across the galaxy... but no a bug meh :)

Do note, the 'visited systems' setting in the map is for you. Not anyone else. For example if you don't have an Alioth permit, and so have never been there, it will show as red.

Oh! I had no idea, thank you. I genuine thought it meant no one had visited.

You can make the "visited" filter in the GalMap work that way with EDSM data, if you use the Visited Stars Cache, with the caveats that you'll have to occasionally update it to stay current, and that only shows what EDSM knows about, so there can still be pre-discovered systems that will show as unvisited. But it helps.... a lot.

Finally found my first (as in I discovered the planets) Biologicals :)

My First Biologicals.jpg

I entered the system pinged it then FSS and there they where, two High Metal planets with Biologicals. Each planet was also quite high G 1.92 and 3.46 thankfully in the excitement I noticed with enough height that full reverse thrusters stopped me from becoming part of the "high metallic" content of the planet :)

Planet 1: BYOI AUSCS YU-P E5-3 6 (Gravity 1.92G)
Planet 2: BYOI AUSCS YU-P E5-3 3 (Gravity 3.46G)

Very happy

Yep. And the farther you go from the beaten paths, the more likely that an unvisited-from-EDSM system will actually be unvisited. Quite useful when you're heading out.
