Head on Ramming Tactic

Video of a close call with a head on collision between an Eagle and Sidewinder and what looks like a bug.

Two things:

1) how did he go from red to yellow on the radar?

2) I was up against a free Sidewinder and I see more and more commanders going for the ramming tactic, especially against eagles. At the point of collision I did not have enough lateral thrust to move out of the way. I hope in future builds something can be put in place to avoid the increase of using the free ships like this.

Does blipping warp reset you in the combat area, effectively making you neutral (Yellow) when you were red????

Get used to ramming because many see it as a legitimate (if desperate) tactic.[/url]

legitimate tactic if you are not in a starter ship yes. I have done it myself. Using the starter ship like this is more about sticking it to someone who has a better ship then actually trying to be good at combat.

Playing chicken as it were. I have often bumped into other ships as I sometimes get fixated on the target as I am firing and forget to pull away.

He wasn't deliberately trying to ram you. I guarantee he was simply used to the AI moving out of the way.

Yep this! I've rammed a Eagle with a sidewinder, not on purpose but as a consequence of neither of us breaking off the attack. It takes two to tango for a head on ram. If your getting rammed you're not breaking off your attack quick enough. ;-)

I could see the collision coming as soon as he leveled out but my thrust was not enough to break the line between us.

It was as much as your fault as it was his. He was clearly making a full circle; you should have used your lateral thrusters to stay perpendicular to his trajectory.

While i can see peoples point that this is a combat tactic. It could also be looked at as a griefing tactic if a pilot were abusing the free sidewinder option.

This has happened far too frequently to me, and regularly by the same few pilots, to be accidental.

Also, if the player in the sidewinder is deliberately trying to ram you, it is actually very difficult to avoid, especially if you're not even aware that they're charging toward you.

The problem isn't whether or not it's a valid tactic; the problem is that there are definitely people doing this in a free sidewinder to deliberately kill eagles knowing it will cost who they kill without costing them.

Remember that to them, it will have looked as if you have rammed them.

I think this ramming kerfuffle is more about combat arrogance; players expecting their duelling partners to disengage before them; than actual people griefing.

Think about it for a moment. Why would anyone want to ram others? They kill themselves. They get no money. They have to spend 3 minutes or so, actually getting back to the combat zone.

There is no incentive. Face it, if you were rammed, you were also the ram-ee.

I've head on collided with another commander before now, both our guns blazing during approach. I'm pretty sure we were both in sidewinders (it was a week ago, I'm lucky if I can remember 8 hours ago...), I had no intention at all of dodging out of the way!

I came out the worse shield-wise for the collision, although I appeared to win eventually (opponent destroyed), I didn't get a kill credit in the stats screen for it :(
