Heading back out!

Exploration has always been one of my favourite occupations in ED. It was the first (and still the only) category I reached "Elite" in.

The game becomes very "Zen" out in the black- Just me, my wee DBX, and the Infinite Void.

I'd been kicking around the bubble for a few months, doing "populated space" stuff, during which time I signed up here. Recently there have been a few threads about going exploring (looking at YOU, Cmdr. Crashdown :)) which inspired me to hit the "road" again.

I've retooled my ol' DB Explorer, now featuring D-rated PP, PD, O², thrusters and sensors, A-rated FSD and an A4 scoop + ADS/DSS. I didn't take shields, AFMU or heatsinks, relying instead on careful flying to see me through. This get 'er jumping 33+ Ly, not too shabby!

I have no idea where I'm going- Beagle point? Outer rim? It matters not. I'm going.

I'll post pics. I launched the same evening that skins were announced, so I flew home to paint my ship before setting out again. Therefore the first couple pics will show the default skin.

Hold the fort, see y'all when I get home.

thats a nice picture - the planet looks serene and calm. You mentioned you turned back? To the bubble? That's a short exploration trip!

On a side note ... 4A fuel scoop against a 32T fuel tank takes aaaaaaages ... My own trip to Sag A and back was in a DBX and blimey ... I have quite a few memories of sitting there waiting to fuel up ... Love the jump range though !

Get some calming tunes to fly to while you're out there, and safe travels.

Here's a tip, I don't know if it still works, so if you do it, you'll be testing it for me; Turning off Flight Assist while in normal flight will make you stay at zero throttle when you jump to a new system. It doesn't hinder Supercruise in any way, and prevents any accidental star kisses.

I can concur that the above statement of advice is correct.

Glad I inspired you :)
Good luck on your trip CMDR.

Nice pic BTW, I've catalogued loads of water worlds on my expedition :)

Yeah, in the OP I explain why I turned back. I'm already further out than I first got.

4A scoop is good enough for me, full tank in a couple minutes.

I like to listen to Deep Purple while out in the Deep Black.

To drop at zero throttle, I either:

a.) Throttle down during FSD countdown
b.) Charge FSD while at full stop and using boost to initiate the jump

i was contemplating going back out but in a DBS / Courier / Asp scout but the high 26ly ~ ish range puts me off, i don't want to take my asp ex again though, i dunno i quite like the idea of taking a small ship to the edge of space.

I highly recommend the DBX. Handles great both in realspace and SC, superb visibility from cockpit, BIG ol' jump range. Not too pricey either.

What I do is charge FSD while stationary. Then when it's ready, just hit the boost button. You should drop out in the next system throttled down.

anyone got some screenshots of it in white?
I got a white DBS, will that do? I'll post a screenie this afternoon

Don't take a Courier - the 3A is so slow you can't even fill a standard tank before the ship overheats. No fun at all.
The DBS is better; it has the same 3A scoop but runs a lot cooler so doesn't overheat when scooping.
I've never flown the Asp Scout, I don't know anything about it.
Like others, I love the DBX. Point at the star, scoop and scan. Slow it down, take in the sights, the scoop speed isn't an issue

Yay! let me see the white DBS (it's all about the screenshots when exploring and google dont have any white DBs exploring)

yeah i've not flown my courier for a while, i forgot the hull was made from chocolate,

choice is now between shield-less DBS or DBX so i can fit a AFU, although i did notice if you get a B-spec AFU you get more ammo, does it work a bit like SCB's where if i take a B spec it will have more repair points overall?

DBX has 33+LY without scrimping too much though :)
