Heading to Sag A*

Hello CMDs,

I'm about to embark on my first exploration journey to Sag A, I'm currently running in an Anaconda with a 31.53LY laden jump range, I've opted to take a 64T fuel tank, 7a fuel scoop, planetary landing bay, 64t cargo space and some collection limpets.

I have x2 5b AFMU and x1 4a AFMU, with a 18 heat sinks (playing it safe).

My main goal besides the journey itself is exploration data for the Engineers, should I honk my discovery scanner and jump or is it worthwhile to explore in-depth in certain systems?

Or will I naturally accumulate decent amounts of data just heading there? I'm undecided if I want to return straight away, I may stay out for a while and really head for the far reaches.

Any tips, advice and suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks.

Gaining rank with engineers is just about the amount of credits you cash in. For that, the best approach (as in credits per hour) is generally to just jump, honk the ADS and jump again. Since you'll be approaching the core, neutron farming works even better but isn't necessary since just jonking your way to Sag A* and back should gain you enough credits to get to level 5 with both Farseer & Martuuk.

That said, my advice would be to do some actual exploring rather than just travelling. Exploring is more than just credits. Go find something new!

Edit: there really is no need for more than the standard 32T tank (if you ever think you've come across a so-called "badlands" of unscoopable stars, just head up or down) and heatsinks are entirely optional - one or two might be a worthwhile insurance if you are cautious but in nearly 90 thousand jumps I've yet to use one.

I fully intend to go further once I've hit Sag A, 1 milestone out of the way, at least for me anyway. After that am looking to head a good 20/25k LY out possibly and really discover and put my name on some things.

I'm currently on Xbox one so I'm sure the galaxy isn't as discovered as it is on PC.

Good luck on your trip! It's really up to you but let me offer some build advice.

- 64T fuel tank: useless, dead weight. Spent over 6 months on DWE going to Beagle Point, beyond, and back with a 26T fuel anaconda and haven't had a single problem. The desire to bring extra fuel seems like a logical choice but when you get out there with that huge scoop you realize it's not really necessary at all.

- 18 heat sinks is impossible with the 'conda's 8 utilities, so I'll assume you meant 16 :) Either way it's total overkill - if you bring two launchers you will likely return with at least some heatsinks still unused. Possibly all of them depending on luck. If you want to fill up your utilities some chaff and point defense will make your eventual return safer.

- 5B AFMU; is this because it carries more ammo than the 5A? You need to look at more than just ammo amount - the A unit repairs more per unit of ammo and when you run the numbers, an A rated unit will repair overall more damage than the B rated unit of the same class. A's are better, end of story. Not a huge deal, especially with ability to reload them, but this common myth that the B's are better is a pet peeve of mine :)

At any rate, whatever build you take out there, good luck and have fun! :)

I'm about 2000 ly in so far, I admit I probably over estimated my fuel usage, I got caught out once in a string of unscoopable stars so it's an inherent fear I guess, haha.

Yeah sorry I meant 16, definitely overkill on the heat sinks since I never run into problems anymore especially since I started throttling to 0 during jumps.

Admittedly I've never used maintenance units so I'm not sure what the deal was with them.

Ok, since you're already 2000 ly down (and on your first trip), you probably won't turn around for a reconfiguration, but I'd just echo what the others said:
- extra fuel tank is dead weight (worse than that, since it limits your automatic plottable jumps, no matter whether you fill it or not)
- 3 AFMU's is at least one too many. You can refill the AFMU's with collectable materials, so two of them is enough (one can be used to repair the other in case of damage). A lot of people make do with one, and not so few with none.
- heat sinks is (also) a matter of which ship you're using, but I'd have replaced at least some of them with chaff, point defense or (upgraded) shield boosters. Even if winter isn't coming while you're out there, you will have to return one day.
- since you didn't say anything about a mining laser or a refinery, what did you bring the collector limpets for? Fuel transfer might have been more useful

I'm currently on my way in a 23 ly (got a good roll on the level 4 FSD mod) FAS, NPC combat capable, about halfway (I'm optimistic here...) to the Statue of Liberty nebula. Still undecided whether I should cross over there or go on to Eta Carina.

P.S.: Regarding Whiterose's suggestion - the FAS (like all fededral ships) already comes with two coffee machines [noob]
