I have a rather cheap 5.1 external Soundblaster. The headphone amp on it is powerful enough.

Mind your hearing though - if the sound is enough to annoy your wife to bed from a couple of metres away, you're probably not doing them lugs any favours in the long term.

I actually need a new DAC. I'm planning on buying a pair of monitor speakers next month but need multiple input sources, and my wife just flat out refused to return the pair of Roland monitors I lent her a year ago... So I drank her beer.

I'm using Sennheiser HD 600 headphones, driven by a Focusrite sound card. (One advantage of being a TV sound engineer.) I'm using the DTX option with the "full-range" setting.

The first time I jumped into a HiCZ and a capital ship arrived I nearly lost bowel control.

From the ultimate in quality go for a pair of Beyer DT150. Man they are ugly... but sound awesome. It's the industry standard for music production, so they are reference quality, comfortable and accurate.

Got a set myself. Solid.

all sorts of spacewhale singing or I don't even know what it actually is, but so many sounds that I never heard before.

Does anyone know how to disable this exact noise? I turned off music as I prefer realism but still hear this junk during game play. I can't abide it! It drives me nuts!!

I have the Sennheiser PC 360 headset, but only 'cause I get the employee discount.
I use TrackIR 5 with the TrackClip pro when I'm not using the Vive.
Using a Soundblaster Omni external USB "sound card"
