Hardware & Technical Headset recommendations

Hello! I'm after a bit of advice.

I have the Plantronics stereo headset recommended elsewhere on this forum, but having read about the 5.1 surround sound for ED, wondered if anyone had a good recommendation for a 5.1 headset for about £50 (or less!).

Also, is a 7.1 headet worth it? Do you notice the difference?

Cheers.

Logitech G430

I just got one, its great, appears immediately in the logitech gaming software, as I already have a G15 and a G13 (played MMOs before). Not cheap at £55 but nice sound and comfy. No as comfy as the sony headphone my missus gave me for christmas but they were over £200 quid!! yikes.

I only bought them cos the previous logitech cheapos at about a tenner fell apart, the foam disintigrated into my ears, that along with 2 or 3 lots of tape holding bits together made me go spend some cash.

'scuse my ignorance, but how the hell does 5:1 or 7:1 work with headsets when they're, by nature, a stereo device? I only ever have non-directional sound so it's a slightly alien concept to me....

Cheers, will have a look at them.

They have more than 1 speaker in each ear angled to mimic directional sound, or have clever software that does the same thing with just the one speaker in each ear.

I'm a bit ignorant on the whole thing myself, so I've always put it down to magic :)

I'm considering getting the Asus Orion ROG Gamer Headset with Microphone, great reviews, looks the part and the clincher is the retractable mic to keep it out of the way when not in use and prevent it getting damaged.

not sure about spending the extra tenner on the version with the ROG Spitfire USB Audio Processor though, i think £60 is already enough to spend on a headset.

Some of the more expensive 5.1 phones have the actual physical drivers for real 5.1. That makes them quite heavy.

7.1's all(?) use software emulation

Can't see that putting more drivers in a headset is anything more than a marketing gimmick personally.

You do not see 7.1 high-end studio cans for instance.

Are all the drivers driven by a separate amplifier? I doubt it.

Are they just paralleled, possibly (but unlikely) with crossovers?

so 5.1 is the way then?

You lost me at parallel.

Headset wise I'm not sure there is much difference between 7.1 and 5.1. I have a logitech headset 7.1 and the game sounds great with it. They are very robust but some say its not the most comfortable but I find it fine.
Amazing sound though.

This one is a newer one than I have..on sale at amazon..

I've bought from these guys in the past who refurbish stuff.. even cheaper

I think Plantronics do good 5.1/7.1 too but I heard that they are susceptible to breaking and they are dust magnets so I believe.
