Hear me out if you will :)

To be fair...we don't actually know if hydrogen is "fuel" in this version of the game. Maybe it's pure helium 3 or something else... ;)

But yeah...I even had a discussion with Mike way back about this. I think this cost could just as easily be distributed over to other money sinks instead.

are you sure about us not being sure?

cause the market calling it 'Hydrogen Fuel' kind of makes me think different ;)

You could see it as some kind of tax based on ship tonnage, a bit like UK road tax is based on emissions. Personally I think docking fees based on platform size would make more sense though.

Agreed, this was also what I discussed with Mike about. Same cost AND it would make sense. Oh well...

A Python has a bigger windscreen and body surface for the pump attendant to rub down with his grubby rag, hence the higher charge

ps if your quibbling about fuel costs then YOU CANT AFFORD THE SHIP
HTH

I posted above talking about how fuel costs really don't matter, but you skipped right over that. I posted this thread as a discussion. We've gotten quite a few legitimate answers that will make me think differently about it. That's all I really wanted.

.. the Design Discussion Archive has a section on Fuel ( here ) ...

Sounds like the OP is describing different fuel qualities (which could explain your variation in price?). You'd have to do a "gas mileage test" to discover if more pricey fuels get you further per ton, by being higher octane or whether it's a bug ... but the mechanic of fuels grading was definitely thrashed out in that discussion.

Just look at it as a tax and handling fee based on the ships gross weight. Be thankful we don't have separate landing fees. It cost a lot less to purchase/test and load 5T of fuel on a Learjet at biggin hill than 5T of fuel on a A380 at Heathrow

+1 from me for a sensible answer, love the way the thread has derailed into a beer discussion though......

Yeah but "fuel oil" isn't what your car runs on! :)
.
I think of it like crude oil and supertankers, the hydrogen fuel is the raw stuff, it's then either used for industrial processes or refined for starship use.
.
Along the way it incurs tax, so the cost of ship fuel is much greater than Hydrogen fuel. If, as someone mentioned, the taxes are actually based on ship tonnage or FSD emissions or some other metric, that would account for the discrepancy.
.
Maybe (OT here) the community should put together a list of "in fiction" explanation for some of the oddities of the ED universe (vanishing bounty vouchers, nerfed yaw, rectangular docking slots) to a) help newbies b)for fun.
.
It could take the form:
Q: Why are docking slots rectangular and why only one?
Answer (sensible): Tradition, the first Elite game had a rectangular docking slot
Answer (fiction): Blah blah blah
