I've seen this warping effect as well in SC, and always with other players so I assumed it was their SC "wake".
I also noticed a couple of times that the game seemed to draw the gravity/orbit indicator lines multiple times when there were other players in SC. One time it got particularly nutty and there was a heap of lines layered over each other, and occasionally the gravity indicator circles would quickly flip on an axis. I didn't manage to get a screenie but I've been keeping my eye out for it since.
