Heat sinks

When I went on my big trip two years ago I read that heat sinks were invaluable to explorers.
Everyone was saying that a big danger to explorers was overheating when one jumps into a system and appears between two (or more) stars.

I was out in the black for 19 months, in a Clipper with heat sinks. Didn't use one. I landed between stars on several occasions. Didn't even start to overheat.

Are heat sinks needed for explorers? I say not.

There are times. I haven't really needed one yet but did use one to escape from near a black hole exclusion zone.....could've just flown longer before hitting 'jump' instead but since I had a heat sink staring at me begging to be put to use.

I've arrived between stars a few times and hit 150% fairly quickly but I read that's going away in 2.4, so arguably....heat sinks aren't needed anymore (and needed only very rarely before)

Well, i have been twice in Beagle Point, launched heat sink three times and all accidentally. Never really needed one.
But im still not going anywhere without them as they really doesnt affect your range too much.

Better to be safe than sorry. ;)

I remember chatting to Cmdr Dognosh when he was at Beagle Point and I was a few hundred ly away. And all of a sudden my cockpit started frosting up. OMG......they're here! As Cmdr Dognosh is relaying stories of strange sounds.
Pff.
Oh oh. Why is the proximity light flashing?
Woah......what's that on the scanner?
Oh....spent heat sink......carry on. Nothing to see here. :D

Guess I should've tried one to see how they work *before* setting off. I found a rebind key after it happened the next night too :/ Ditto the boost key.....soooo much fun hitting tab to scroll through the message options only to find yourself hurtling towards a fellow explorer at full pelt 65,000 lys from home.....twice.

Lots of people say they have never used one when exploring, I had to use two soon after starting a planned trip. On each occasion I had emerged from a jump dumped into normal space between multiple stars (yes my throttle was at zero before jump). I had to use a heatsink while low-waking to the escape vector, still suffering some damage. Having only one HS left I abandoned the trip. It will be good news if that sort of incident cannot happen after 2.4 but I think I'll still mount a HSL.

I've never needed a heat sink, while I've been pulled out of SC by binaries many times. Sure you heat up and the cockpit makes a lot of fuss and it all seems frantic and so on, but at the end of it all it results in small amounts of damage which is easily repaired by an AFMU which ammo we already can synth.

In short .... it's fine :)

Never needed a heat sink on either the asp or the DBE...used to have them but never actually used them except once by accident. After that, its just 1.5 tonnes of useless iron that sucks the range down a notch.

I read on the forums from others who claimed heat sinks were invaluable...I would say they are invaluable fer neutrons but fer everything else, a little piloting skill is all thats needed and some thought when fitting a ship to run cold.

I ddnt see me ever needing heat sinks, especially not now that FD are gonna make it even more dull and boring by removing the chance to land in between stars. Now theres even less use fer what was already bordering on useless ^

Same here. Had two close calls since release, both due to my fault, still got through both without heat sinks. However, with the lightweight mods, heat sinks weigh next to nothing now. So, if you have access to Ram Tah (not difficult), you can carry them without giving up anything.

So far I have used heat sinks three times when exploring and two of those were when I was doing a passenger mission with a 'secretive' passenger who did not want to be scanned. I dropped one before leaving the station airlock and upon returning one on approach to go cold and avoid being scanned. The other time was out at Colonia when I was interdicted in my frail shell Asp Explorer that I was taking out to see some of the galaxy before Distant Stars - a DBX was spamming missiles and the heat sinks break the missile lock and act as decoys, since seeker missiles go for the heat source. Having heat sinks also gives you some leeway when landing on very hot worlds and it is also possible to overheat escaping from high-g worlds - I have taken module damage that way back in the bubble.

Depends on the ship. I used to always have heat sinks just in case but now always engineer to run cool and then test to see if I really need them

You should have listened to me! :D
I've always said there's no point in dragging them along.
They're even more useless come 2.4, as we get to benefit more from minor jump range advantages with the new 20 kylie route plotter.

Especially now that we will be able to craft them and the fact that we can make them super light :)

No shields, no heat sink.. just be a good pilot (and do not exaggerate with buzz during exploration)

BTW, with the goodies coming with 2.4, the only thing which worries me is the power plant :|

Try landing in a 6G planet with no shields and then tell me how that went out.

the chance of jumping into a close trinary are tiny ... i have met one in over 15 000 jumps, and that was in the bubble.

with hullrepair-limpets, there is even less reason to take heatsinks, but heat will damage the powerplant. i have a G5 lightweight heatsink launcher on my dbe which i'll take for the upcoming circumnavigation nevertheless. better safe than sorry ...
