Newcomer / Intro Heat - what modules to avoid..?

When working out what modules to install, how do you calculate the potential heat..?

Is it worked out by checking how closely the sum of your deployed modules nearly reaches the capacity of your Power Plant...?
or
Do you have to check the 'thermal load' of each module and add them all up? (if so, what's the danger level...?)
(I have a Type 7 that heats up alarmingly when jumping)

or
... perhaps there's some other system I'm not aware of...?

You can't work it out by numbers. Every ship has different heat efficiency (They have bigger or smaller heat vents in comparison to their power output) so you really have to work it out by feel.

For example if you use the exactly same internals on Cobra and DBX, DBX will run cooler, simply because she's built that way.
So when they are taking heat, they also deal with it better or worse.

As for danger levels, obviously 100% is the line where modules start taking damage, but for short period of time, 150% isn't that bad, either. Unless you are an explorer and every percent means you will have to shorten your trip. Over 200%, you either have a heat sink, or you are in trouble.

And yes T7 is by far the worst ship when comes to dealing with heat. (iEagle is close second, but there it is more apparent as it is a combat ship) You can partially circumvent it by equipping some D-rated modules and go one class lower with your powerplant (But always use A-rated, as their heat efficiency is the best)

Never tried to calculate it.

But certainly foe power plants, maybe everything, A rated are the most thermally efficient.

I try to select modules based on best performance in their primary functions then fudge a bit if I think thermal load will be an issue.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some ships run cooler than others so overheating is less of an issue.

Heating in jumps is down to the FSD so check those for thermal load, it is also effected by the temperature when you start charging so if on a route allow longer for the temperature to drop, unless in fear of interdiction I try to let my ships cool to the low 30s before pressing the jump button.

You can also power off modules to reduce heat.
