This thread is for those of us who use the heavy armor types (9.00 T):

1. Military Grade Composite
Superior protection against all types of attack

2. Mirrored Surface Composite
Superior resistance to thermal damage at the cost of vulnerability to kinetic attack

3. Reactive Surface Composite
Superior resistance to kinetic damage at the cost of vulnerability to thermal attack

Based on the descriptions, the Military Grade Composite sounds like the optimal alternative because it offers superior protection against all types of attack. However, it's the least expensive heavy armor type, which suggests that the second and third might be superior.

Question 1
Do you know if the Military Grade Composite offers higher resistance to kinetic attack than the Mirrored Surface Composite does, and higher resistance to thermal attack than the Reactive Surface Composite does? If so, it's the best all-around protection we can get.

Question 2
It seems like the vast majority of experienced Commanders use laser weapons (thermal) to bring down shields, then multi-cannons or missiles (kinetic) to destroy the hull. Since armor only affects the hull, then Reactive Surface Composite should be the superior alternative. However, it would make us more vulnerable to the odd Commander who uses 4x lasers. What are your thoughts on this; which heavy armor type do you prefer?

P.S. For the sake of the poll: As your preferred armor choice might be situational, select the one you'd use for 'regular' PvP.

Sometime near launch they nearly tripled the mass of armour upgrades.

The Military Composite on a Cobra went from +10 mass up to +27! That's a huge hit to jump range, thruster speed, and maneuverability.

I'm just using the standard stuff, due to the insane mass, though I may try reinforced with a downgraded 8 ton fuel tank. It still hurts though.

Edit: I don't pvp so armor isn't that big a concern for me.

I'll bump this once since it was posted at night.

I'm very interested in learning if the Military Grade Composite offers better protection against the two weaknesses of the more expensive armors.

For the sake of example, which alternative do you think is most correct (relatively)?

Alternative 1
Military Grade Composite (T:50, K:50)
Mirrored Surface Composite (T:75, K:25)
Reactive Surface Composite (T: 25, K:75)

Alternative 2
Military Grade Composite (T:50, K:50)
Mirrored Surface Composite (T:75, K:50)
Reactive Surface Composite
(T: 50, K:75)

(comparing hypothetical thermal and kinetic armor values)

i would like to know the difference too.

i have seen post's claiming that military is the best all round, but if so, why the price difference.

Has anyone done any testing.

I have military grade on my viper

having either the other two seems a bit daft given the most common load outs are laser/multi cannon so you may benefit against one to only be chicken feed against the other

I can only afford Military but will try Mirrored when I can. The logic being that Mirrored will give more time to deploy shield cells. Don't know how much time though, or if it will make any tactical difference.

Considering the vast majority of NPC's tend to use beam weapons I went with mirrored. And tbh I have found it to be superior to military grade in practice. I rarely get those through and through shots now, ya know the ones that distort the HUD. Also seems like its a lot stronger physically as well, since ramming seems less of an issue damage wise.

Always use lightweight and plough credits into shields/shield cells. My philosophy is...if they are hitting your hull you have already lost. Even if you kill them the rewards is probably going to be less than the cost of repearing my ship.

BTW I'm in a Python so any damage is expensive
