I would like to sugest something:

How about, giving us a second federal corvette, that is geared up for exploration, but not worth bothering for combat?!

I explain...

One with less mass (therefore weaker hull), with smaller and fewer hardpoints, better FSD slot, no military slots, or just one.

And while we at it, more specialized equipment geared towards exploration duties.

We already have that in the game... it is called Anaconda! same kind of view out of the cockpit and is already pre-fitted with magic faerydust hull that gives it the best jump range in game. Has 1 more optional internal slot to bring with extra junk on your exploration...
