Hello everyone. I'm new here and trying to learn.

I have recently had a problem with my prospector and collector limpits. I went to an asteroid field, and they wouldn't work. I would launch them and they would die on me right away. I could see them floating but they were not in my contacts tab. Then I went toa an adjoining cluster and there was no problem. Is this normal or is it a bug. If it is normal what am I looking for, so I don't just keep launching a bunch of these prospectors?
Thanks for your help.

You were probably moving too fast - did you try slowing down? Some ships are worse for colliding with limpets than others.

i was dead stopped right in front of an asteroid. I could shoot off chunks but my little drones just would be dead in space.

I'm out of ideas then 🤷‍♀️ I vaguely remember ppl talking about ship kits getting in the way, but that may be wrong - hopefully a miner will be along soon (y)

do you have a refinery for the drones to drop off the fragments?
assuming you have a refinery do you have free slots for the drones to drop of the fragments?
both these instances you should get a warning

if your firing limpits and theyre not collecting, check the ignore list, if say you add ice to the ignore and all there is to collet is ice the limpits will do nothing

when you fire limpets makesure you dont target fragments\items otherwise they collect 1 and expire. if you dont target fragments\items limpets will run until their timer expires

if the limpits die straight away, maksure your not too close to the asteroid or the asteroid is not between you and the fragments, limptes tend to be pretty dumb sometimes they have a tendency to try and fly through not around obstacles

Often, the first prospector limpet dies immediately when launched, but apart from that, I only have the problem when flying too fast. When firing new prospector limpets, the previous limpets you launched will "fail", because the new limpet "takes over". This depends on the prospector limpet controller size. A small controller (size 1) will only be able to handle one limpet, while a size 3 controller can handle two limpets simultaneously. When I started mining, I thought the "Prospector Limpet Failed" was because they failed, but later I learned that it was just because a new limpet was launched (failing the previous one). Kind of like the "SLOW DOWN!" not being a message to you about easing the throttle, but because some nearby gravity well is slowing you down.

I think this may have been the problem because when i went to a new cluster there were no problems collecting. I guess I was just throwing them against a wall. I tried doing all the otherthing tgat were suggested but nothing replicated what happened. Thanks for your help.

Before you enter the roids orbit just check to see if ones below you in close proximity.
Cos when you fire your limpets off to go collect they will collide with that roid below if your real close to it.
Hence alot of miners preferring medium ships. But as you get more experienced you'll no doubt try a cutter or anaconda.
Just remember the bigger you are the tighter it is to squeeze between roids when their tightly clustered as they are sometimes.

Also, do not "Target" the material you are trying to get. If you target something, the limpet will retrieve that item and then die. Leave all items un-targeted and then the limpet will retrieve all items out there.

This reply has been suggested a few times in this thread. Allow me to offer an explanation about why this behavior exists...

When you're mining, you generally want to collect as much stuff as possible with your limpets before they expire, so you would not target anything when "launching" a collector limpet. They then go on their merry way, collecting all goodies that are not on your ignore list. They go on collecting until their rated lifetime expires, then simply become so much space debris. (Can't we recycle in the 34th century? ♻️ )

For some missions, you're in much more of a hurry, so targeting an object to be collected gives you the benefit of a limpet that travels quite a lot faster, but only lasts as long as it takes to get that one object. Salvage ops & "illegal" black box ops come to mind pretty readily. Pirates often drop in on you (in force) and start shooting.

This is a distinction that's essential to understand. You don't want to be wasting limpets and there certainly are scenarios where the faster limpet is very useful!

Good luck out there, CMDR. Enjoy the mining!

EDIT: Typo.

Hmm. Let's see. I probably need a collector limpet to collect all the collector limpets that were busy collecting until they stopped collecting. The collector limpet would be collecting ex-collector limpets until it stops collecting. Then I need another collector to collect that ex-collector. Then...
Yup!
I've...
got...
it...
... I think.

Something just doesn't add up but I can't quite put my finger on it.

haha nice reply,it does work honest.trial and error will see you through

re: first limpet failing. If you open your cargo hatch before firing first limpet this doesn't happen.
At least for me, firing a limpet opens the cargo hatch. On a few occasions, it closed the cargo hatch after launching. Haven't quite worked this out. After launch, if it closes the cargo hatch, I just open it again after the limpet parks and states "Open Cargo Hatch"
