Newcomer / Intro Hello! I'm new!

Hi!

I'm tinman, I've played a lot of eve online, and after 7 years of that I've grown exhausted and disinterested. I picked this up and love it so far!

Steam reports I played ED for 38 hours so far. I like the game, but right now all I'm doing is RES/HRES NPC pirate hunting. I have one ship, and i've done very little trade. I enjoyed trading, but idk how to go about it properly. I found a website that has a tool for finding trade routes, but I dont get it.

I'd like to get a type-6 and start trading, my cobra set up averages a C in the outfit, i'd say. Some A4 parts, but all the weapons are G or E, I cant seem to afford better guns. I'm thinking about switching to a vulture after trading in the cobra but I havent even seen one for sale...

Goals:

Get into a vulture and a type-6 (about 10 mil? i'm up to 3 mil)
learn how to trade effectively
find more lucrative combat ventures
Learn more advanced piloting

I've searched the net for combat tutorials, but I'd love more if you guys know any that are technical.

Thanks!

Hi there. Welcome to E|D.

There are a few points in your post I can help you with:

  1. Weapons ratings don't work like other module ratings. The letter refers broadly to how much damage the weapon puts out, which is affected by hardpoint size. For example, a Cobra has 2 class 1 and 2 class 2 hardpoints. Lasers will range from G to E. I think you can et a B class torpedo pylon too.
  2. Trading is really simple - buy low; sell high. The trick to it is to find good prices. For example, extraction economies produce ores that are consumed by refinery economies. The refineries produce metals which are consumed by industrials and high techs. Industrials and high techs produce goods that are consumed by the other economies. From my experience, it's easier to find good prices on metals out towards the frontier. Higher populations are more stable economically - prices won't crash quite so easily.
  3. A fully combat-ready Vulture will cost you about 15 - 20 million cr. I personally have gone off the Vulture and Fer de Lance as they make RES hunting too easy. I love love love the Diamondback Scout. A fully-fitted Scout will cost you about 6mcr. As for the T6, I think about 3mcr should fit it out well enough for trading. If you find a good route, it is a viable route to a larger ship. Be aware though that just trading can become a grind, so make sure you mix it up and play at your own pace.

Also note that the Type 6 is the largest pure trading vessel capable of docking at outposts. Type 7s and Type 9s are stuck to Stations.

Just to let you know!

Vulture is a weapon monster!!!
But its really short of power.. and its annoying.
You will always have to disable some stuff on your ship to make it work properly.

Hello and Welcome

I enjoyed trading, but idk how to go about it properly. I found a website that has a tool for finding trade routes, but I dont get it.

These are the sites I use, depending on what trade info I'm trying to work out:

Thrudd's Elite Dangerous Tools
Thrudd's Tools has it's own separate database. It does not use the EDDN to get it's data, it relies on CMDR's adding it. I find it useful to double check results I get from the other sites for this reason.
It has a couple of search options that I haven't found on the other sites I use and it also has a nice list of rare commodities and their locations.

Inara
I love this one. This is an Elite Companion site, not a pure trade site. It has lots of in-game news and you can have your own CMDR's Log, Fleet Details, etc... Trade-wise it does have some good info available that I haven't found elsewhere (like closest federal\imperial\alliance system and closest blackmarket). Uses the EDDN to get it's data.

EDDB
This has some good searches on it, like the Multi-Hop Route finder that the other sites do not have. I use this in conjunction with Thrudd's to help weed out the the false\old data. Uses the EDDN to get it's data.

There are loads more 3rd party tools out there, Wolverine has put together the complete list of tools\spreadsheets\manuals and other data sources.

Staying with the theme of 3rd party tools...

I find ED Shipyard and Coriolis indispensable when trying to work out what I can put on my ship.

Both are great...
You'll find many CMDR's post they're ship setups on the forum using ED Shipyard as you can import\export it very easily.

Here's my ship for example:
[Viper]
M: 2F/G Multi-cannon
M: 2F/G Multi-cannon
S: 1F/F Pulse Laser
S: 1F/F Pulse Laser
U: 0E Kill Warrant Scanner
U: 0A Shield Booster

BH: 1I Lightweight Alloy
RB: 3A Power Plant
TM: 3A Thrusters
FH: 3A Frame Shift Drive
EC: 2D Life Support
PC: 3A Power Distributor
SS: 3D Sensors
FS: 2C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 4)

3: 3A Shield Generator
3: 3C Shield Cell Bank
2: 2E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 4)
1: 1E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 2)
---
Shield: 214.20 MJ
Power : 10.77 MW retracted (90%)
13.03 MW deployed (109%)
12.00 MW available
Cargo : 6 T
Fuel : 4 T
Mass : 107.3 T empty
117.3 T full
Range : 13.86 LY unladen
13.15 LY laden
Price : 2,745,901 CR
Re-Buy: 137,295 CR @ 95% insurance
That can be simply copied and pasted in to ED Shipyards so you can fiddle with the setup yourself.

I think that Coriolis lets you fine-tune your power setup better than ED Shipyards though, and it's also a lot prettier! :p
