Just wanted to introduce myself! so excited to get into Elite Dangerous, just picked it up and downloading as i type
Any tips for a starting pilot?

Personally I'd just try to have fun at the start. I think you start in space near one of the Coriolis stations. Try moving around and see how the controls play out for you. There is a basic Sidewinder manual here
Have a quick look for that, and see how you get on.

Don't spend all your money on cargo if you don't wish to have to start again. Always keep a reserve.
If you want combat then just go for it. The more you do the better you get.
You will die a lot at first.
If you get interdicted and don't want to fight put 4 pips in Eng and boost until you can Supercruise again.
Fly safe.
Basically this. Also try the single player missions, they are a nice basic combat primer.
Ooh, and play around with your control bindings until you get something comfortable. I had boost on a button that I just couldn't get used to when I started and kept laminating myself to the station walls when docking.
