Hello to all Elite: Dangerous Vets

Hello!

I am new, just today have purchased the Beta 1 deal. I bought this since I felt it would be nice to help out the development team with a tiny extra amount.

Any suggestions/advice for a newbie? :)

2 pieces of advice....

Be excellent to each other
and
Party on dude.

Its a steep learning curve, but Elite was meant to be tough. You'll be fine.

oh, and buy a HOTAS stick.

Rep for quotes from some of my favourite films.

I advise doing at least the first 3 solo combat missions.

Spend some time getting your key bindings or controller settings how you like them.

Practice Docking with the free Sidewinder (a lot)

Don't worry about asking silly questions, everyone has to start somewhere.

Don't get disheartened, you get it in the end

Welcome!.

I would suggest visiting the updates subforum and watching the developer diary videos and reading the newsletters if you havent already.

Then down the bottom of the forum is the design discussion forum, its well worth reading this to see how things have been, or are being designed.

Both of these will give you a good understanding of exactly what Elite Dangerous is.

Two key tip I'm going to give you as a new player myself:

1. Be really careful where you shoot, and make absolutely certain you wont hit an ally. A mission can go from fantastic to miserable with just a few stray blasts

2. Under no circumstances attempt to retrieve cargo that is sat right next to a space station. I made this mistake trying to retrieve a container of gold.

Thank you all for the advices! Coming from EVE I was actually hoping this game would be complex. I've been watching youtube for hours now, just to get the hang of what's going on.

Community wise, are there player organisations yet?

Hi there Carpathian.

It's quite easy to get into. It's not that complicated.
Well, I guess that depends on the person.

I am okay with the basics but the advanced stuff feels like Expert stuff to me :p
Not that I am complaining but just giving my opinions on how gameplay can be for different people.

I believe as long as one is having fun, it doesn't matter whether you are getting the best skills for the game or not..

Suggestions wise:
- Go slow if need be, don't rush.
- Boost and run from enemies if you are not confident.
- if you have an empty cargo and you don't mind losing your ship, go whack them as you see fit :D
- Try to avoid self-kill as the current bugs seems to result in inability to buy back your immediate destroyed ship.
- Be patient in docking. We have newbies that need time to dock and AIs that are not optimized to dock well yet.
- Take your time to learn. There is no need to rush to learn to be really good.
- If a quick learner, that's good. if not, just take your time.
- Though there are trollers, there are always good people who will help you, and your always helpful youtube is
always there

I've been trying to reply for a while now, the messages don't seem to go through though :O

I thank you all for the advices, it's nice to see people that care about the community.

I love games that are complicated, so I was glad to read this was one of them.

Does the game support player organisations yet?

No organization support yet. I don't know how much of that we'll get anyway. But you can form groups and have preferential sessions with your friends.

tbh, i don't know why ppl say it's so complicated, at least atm i don't think it is

within a few hours you will know the basics, ofc there's more to discover, but it's not rocket-science... oh wait :)

(the full game will have more to learn and discover ofc)

Greetings Commander Carpathian, great to have you on board ;-)

Best bit of advice I can give you is practice, practice, practice. And just for laughs, practice some more :D Also, you'll find there's a fantastic core of people here who are only too happy to answer questions/give you advice & tips at most any hour of the day given how well spread out we seem to have folks.

Fly safe Commander :)

i'll chip in with some advice as nobody has said it yet.

unless you are in a free sidewinder NEVER EVER spend every penny you have on cargo. the way the insurance works is all our ships and equipment are insured by the pilots federation, but when your ship is destroyed just like in the real world you have to pay an excess on your insurance.

if you are even one credit short of this amount you can kiss your cobra (or other ship) goodbye. your going to be flying a bog standard sidewinder for the foreseeable future while you build up your credits again.

insurance costs around 10% of the price of the ship so if you are in a standard cobra it would be a good idea to save 20-25k at least, so you still have enough cash left over to carry on trading.

as for controllers its up to you what you use, i have both an X52 HOTAS and an Xbox360 controller and TBH out of the two i mainly use the 360. once you figure out where everything is and bind it to your liking it has just about enough controls to get away with, although i do use the KB for chat and to activate hyperspace. going to buy a chatpad and headset for it so in a week i will have everything at my fingertips :)

welcome to the forums, see you in the black :D

Is it a good idea to play this with the old mouse and keyboard? I could get a controller for it...

Also, how do I talk to Amy (or whatever the name of the onboard AI is).

Well for my first experience I didnt understand how to find the docking pad, so I spent the last 20 minutes looking for it. Eventually some guy started to bump into me, and after I opened coms to try and talk to him he opened fire and suicided on me.

Fun times :D

step 1: Go into solo and grind enough credits to buy a great setup

step 2: Integrate into multiplayer and pretend you've achieved something

Yea I'm afraid there is no predicting some people, but the good news is there is solo play if you fancy playing without the worry of being shot in the back.... Well actually the AI does that too but at least there's a reason (ie. the NPC pirate that wants your cargo), as opposed to smearing your brains across the landing bay just for the buzz!

My advice, much like the others, play around with the free sidewinder to start with; check out the bulletin boards for well paying deliveries, have a good explore and don't be afraid to run away (Boost FTW!) at the sign of trouble!

Once you feel a bit more confident and you've saved up a bit more to afford the insurance excess, upgrade your ship and take some more risks, but always try and ensure you have enough left for the excess and trading!

Have fun and fly safe!
