Helm, take us to combat speed!

So I was playing around with Voiceattack last night, and it suddenly occured to me that you could fly a ship almost entirely with voiceattack.

It wouldn't be good for dogfighting, but something like a Cutter, which doesn't dogfight anyway, might be quite fun. I'm imagining a Cutter with turret weapons all over, flown entirely with voice commands ("helm, 3 points to starboard!", "Helm, 30 degree roll to port", "Fire at will").

Rather than trying to fly entirely by replicating each flightstick input with seperate commands, some commands could perform entire maneuvers, such as setting throttle to 50%, then combining the required number of seconds of vertical pitch for a 180 degree turn with a few bursts of vertical thrusters, all activated by a single command ("Bring us about!"). With a bit of practice and experience, and a lot of trial and error, more complex maneuvers could be added for specific situations. Like perhaps a long looping roll, into an FA:eek:ff boost turn designed to keep an approaching enemy in sight of the top mounted turrets in "joust" type situations, using the Cutter's speed to exit the maneuver at high speed to make it difficult for small nimble ships to get close in behind the Cutter.

Has anyone tried anything like this?

Would there be a better ship for it than the Cutter, bearing in mind that exclusively using voice commands would make conventional dogfighting virtually impossible?

I am sure I remember seeing a video of someone using Voice Attack to entirely control their ship (not sure about steering, though), I think it was one of the voicepack authors.

I've made a macro in the past that selects 'launch' in a starport, raised the ship to the slot, retracted landing gear and set throttle to 50%. Only worked on that ship in that outfit, but still. :)

Fireytoad still does. A lot of the hcs voice packs include some basic movements, and have recently been updated for the new Horizons operations; requesting your ship to return, retrieving the SRV and launching from the planet for instance. You do still have to pull the stick back manually though to orientate yourself. They're at hcsvoicepacks.com - of course they're more about the voice responses, but a lot work has gone into these aspects too.

Exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. Each maneuver would have to be carefully timed for the specific ship in question.

Really I am picturing this as being Captain of a ship, rather than being the pilot. You might take manual control for fine maneuvers, but mostly you would give orders, and your invisible npc crew would obey, possibly with vocal acknowledgements (would ideally need several voice packs, so that each "crew member" could have their own distinctive voice).

I'll save for a Conda first, and if it works there, try the cutter or corvette.

I have full helm commands programmed in voice attack, had it for over a year now. The ship needs to have Flight assist off in order for it to work correctly. The cool thing about Voice attack is you can program in thruster commands down to the millisecond, it means you can program incredibly accurate helm commands.

TBH honest I only built the commands for fun, hand flying the ship in PvP is the only option, still I can fully control my Anaconda against NPC's, plus take it from launch to dock completely hands free via helm orders
