Help a new player get a Corvette!

Hello CMDRS.

Relatively new player here (over 120 hours). Never delved into increasing my actual rank with the super powers but now I want to.

I heard that board flipping is gone, but since I never got to experience it, I don't feel like I'm missing much.
Please explain to me how I go about getting real admiral in federation? Or Duke for the imperial cutter. I do want both, but I can start with either ship.

TLDR: I don't know what I need to be looking for. I want the absolute fastest way to grind ranks. Really hope some of you elites can give me a detailed guide.

Thank you!

Just do missions that give Rep+++ donations and trading are usually the easiest but you can find them in any type of missions.

agree don´t grind, now its easy do misson for feds with rep++ or more every time you can, i think it´s not influence its reputation you need

First you need to look for missions with the word "Naval" somewhere in the description - Naval strike contract, Naval cargo delivery, Naval item recovery etc.

Complete one of those and you'll be recruited into whichever navy you completed the mission for.

After that, you just need to do regular missions for related factions (either fed or imp factions) to incease your rank in that navy.
You'll see your rank increasing in the bar-chart of the (deep breath) reputation tab of the status page of the right-hand HUD.

When the bar-chart gets "full" it means you've completed that rank.
You can then look out for another "Naval" mission, which'll promote you to the next rank.

Rinse and repeat.

Those only become available once you reach 100%. just so you know OP. Your ranks progress show under the Status Panel

You want to do mission that give you REP with a minor faction that belongs to the Federation. And more +++ is faster ranking.

General things to look for
The more minor factions belonging to the Federation, the more potential mission you can pick up.
Try finding systems at the edge of he bubble, preferably where all missions goes to the same destination system,
If the destination system only have a single station to deliver to, it is even better
If the destination system have many minor faction belong to Federation, you are likely to deliver to these, giving you extra bonus on your ranking, both missing giver and mission recipient gives you reputation, and if both are Federation, then faster ranking.

Also if you do not get any rank up mission, you are not loosing any progress, so just keep on doing missions, you could then rank up, several times in a row. Remember, rank up missions is for a specific rank, so no use in taking 3 rank up mission for the same rank.

TL/DR find mission for minor factions that belong to Federation, pick those that gives REP , the more +++ the more rank you gain.

Thank you so much for this. This is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't know you specifically had to do the naval missions, but I did them anyway. So will a naval mission always show up when its supposed to?

No, the first one will appear BEFORE you've been recruited into a navy at all.

After that they'll appear when you've completed enough regular missions to fill the rank-bar, just as I said.

Yea once you reach 100% in rank. then a Naval Mission will appear. You can only do them if you are allied with the Minor Faction that is giving them out.

Wow, I love this community. So amazing how you guys are so willing to help me. Thank you so much!

All of the posts have been very helpful to me. Especially Misty_Dark's post and Stealthie.

I love soaking up all the knowledge from you guys. I really appreciate it!

So I will head out to the fringes to find some good systems!

Is there a type of mission i should take over others? Also, Should I bring my cargo heavy python or stick with my krait phantom? My phantom has 36t cargo and 50ly jump range. My python has 192t and 18ly jump range

They show up sporadically.

Not every superpower-affiliated faction will offer one exactly when you need it so you just have to keep checking the mission-boards at stations you visit.

The good news is that any "rank" you earn while you're waiting for a naval-rank mission will be carried forward to the next rank.

So, for example, say you're at the Fed rank of Cadet.
You run a bunch of cargo missions for fed factions until your rank-bar is full.
You're now looking for a naval rank-up mission.
In the mean-time, you might do another half-dozen missions for fed factions.
You then find your naval rank-up mission and complete it.
You'll be promoted from Cadet to Midshipman and, if you check the naval rank-bar, it'll already be part-way full again as a result of the half-dozen missions you did while you were waiting for a rank-up mission to appear.

Yup, just look for rep+++++++ missions.

But remember, the Corvette isn't a god ship. It's not particularly good for PvP, it's rebuy is high, modules are expensive, it has an absolutely crap jump range, and it is still quite possible to blow up in one, especially if it's not A rated and modified.

It's pretty good for PvE, when fully outfitted and modified.
But desperately needs the guardian FSD booster to make it useful.

Ah, so if I am understanding this correctly, rank progress carries forward even if you are at 100% and don't do a naval mission right away, making it so you dont have to worry about chasing down a navy rank up mission as soon as you hit 100%. Glad that's a thing.

Any recommendations on a type of ship I should take? The two ships I have that i think would be good is my 192t python, although with 19ly jump. Then i have my 50ly krait phantom with only 36t cargo but i can remove my rank 5 afm and add more cargo or add a cabin

I honestly did not know that. Why do people want the corvette so bad then? Personally I want a cutter more than a corvette, but the collector in me wants them both. I got all the guardian stuff(modules, weapons, SLF) out of the way, so there's that.

It's a status symbol more than anything.

Nothing wrong with it, just need to take in to account, there is no "god ship" in ED.
Every ship has its ups and downs.

The Corvette (in my opinion) excels in combat, and oddly, mining, but is pretty useless as a daily use ship, unless fitted with a good scoop, and guardian FSD booster.

I owned the Corvette before boosters existed, and it simply didn't suit my play style (which was basically do whatever), the Anaconda suited me more. So I sold the Corvette.
But now I have booster tech, and a home bae with my Squadron, I might buy another.

I have no interest in the Cutter.
Being out manoeuvred by a planet isn't my idea a fun ship to fly. Lol

You can argue either ship. Personally I don't like flying the Cutter, but it is a fantastic hauler. I do like the Corvette. It's just personal taste.

Yep, I'll be that guy :D

Why do you want the Corvette? Do you think it will give you an instant 'I Win' button? Do you think it is the end game? You admit you are relatively new to the game, all I am saying is don't become fixated on a mythical 'end game' ship thinking it will make you invincible. Use a third party tool like Coriolis, create your perfect Corvette then look at the price and double it. That is the minimum credits you will need. If you haven't unlocked the necessary Engineers then jot down the requirements needed to unlock them, including unlocking any other Engineers that you will be required so you can get access to the ones you really want. Then look at the mats you will need to have to Engineer it for whatever role you want. Once you can look at those three factors without shuddering, then you can think about the long grind to becoming a Rear Admiral in the Federation Navy.

I'm not saying don't do it, it is admirable to have a goal in any pursuit. Just make sure you are attempting this for the right reasons and not for any misguided ones.
